A good reminder for all of us

While there's nothing wrong with being a "people pleaser," if that becomes your raison d'etre, then you're not living your own life--you're living for the approval of others. I like the way this audiobook showed the negative side of people pleasing (when done to a fault)--not just for the people pleaser--but also for those subject to the people pleaser's actions and behaviors. There have been times when I've said yes when what I really wanted to say was no, and it's usually been a disaster for everyone. But I'm learning. A few years back, a rather intrusive backyard neighbor tried to enter my yard with her hand spade "I just want to get at some weeds that are growing between our fence." "No," I said. "I'll take care of them." She was taken aback that I actually said no. She tried to tell me she would only be a minute and I remained firm and she left. My next-door neighbor, having witnessed this, looked at me with her eyes wide. "If only I had done that 20 years ago when she started coming into my yard."

A must-read for the “good guys”!

It feels like the book is talking directly to you! The author reveals how we tend to compromise ourselves completely just to be in the good graces of others and how these tendencies actually harm us in the long run. This book gives detailed, colorful examples and scenarios of very common situations that many of us have encountered. This is a must-read for those who want to take steps toward beneficial change by saying no.
