Publisher's Summary

London is a powder keg...and Eliza Braxton is the match.

Imagine a London where magic is real...real, but feared. This is Eliza Braxton's London, and she has always accepted her place in it gladly. As one of the Riftborn, her magic has relegated her to the servant class, where she dutifully serves as the lady's maid in one of the most powerful households in the country. There, she uses her remarkable powers of persuasion to keep Elder Hallewell's rebellious daughter in the path to an arranged match of power and prosperity. Eliza has never questioned her loyalty...until now.

Currents of discontent are roiling beneath the city's surface, and Eliza's comfortable existence is about to be caught up in the tide. A resistance is building, a resistance that covets Eliza's talents above all else. But can Eliza betray everything she's ever known for things she never dared to dream?

Why narrator, why?!?!

I was so excited for this audiobook. I love the authors prior books! But however good this book could be is completely ruined by whatever the narrator has decided to do with the way she performs it. So much so that I can't concentrate on the story. Why oh why?!?!?!?! What's with the snake like S sounds and the weird D and T sounds that have a TH sound at the end??? Why draw each sentence out so dramatically? I actually sped up the audio and that helped make it sound more normal... I just don't get why and who would have approved this to be released? I listened to the samples of her other book performances and they are nothing like this. Really disappointing. I'm tempted to return it.

Narration/performance — having a hard time with this recording

I was so very excited for this book to come out on Audible. I love this author and the other series. Even pre-ordered and started it first thing this morning.
The narrator’s pronunciation of her words sound like she’s a snake drawing out every single “s” sound. The ends of the sentences are overly exaggerated. I feel like I’m listening to a performance from Harry Potter talking to the slithering snake in the underground. I’m hoping this gets re-recorded so I can listen at some future point. I was able to increase the audio speed and it sounded better but the ending of the words were still the same. I do hate to judge and complain but I’m very disappointed in this book.

Reading Instead of Listening

Man - I just got done with the first 10 books by this author through Audible and loved it. I didn’t even consider that I would struggle with the new series. After 90 minutes of listening and feeling deeply confused by the reader- I hopped on to the reviews, confirming my experience. The narration of this could have simply been the set up of the story and the dramatics left to the characters where needed. The drawn out style of story telling here is a miss - it reminds me of sitting around a campfire to tell an ominous, spooky story to the children. Those campfire stories are typically minutes though, not hours. It makes it very hard to follow the story line. I also noted the Audible app says there are 9 - 5 star reviews. No way. There is only one and that reviewer only gives 5’s. I looked for the other 8 and they do not display - which is messing with the math if there really is only 1. Regardless, I am going to return the Audible and go buy it on Kindle so I can still read the book. Only this time- it will be with the normal voices I listen to in my head. ;)

Ewww

The narrator was very in articulate and difficult to understand. I have read all of EE Holmes previous books, ten in total, and love her work. I don’t know what happened when she wrote this, I couldn’t listen to it for more than two hours and hardly followed the story. I’ve actually returned the title.

Most annoying voice and overacting ever

Normally I love audible books and I have to tell you I loved this authors gateway series however this Narrator is completely annoying she gave me a freaking headache when I was trying to listen.
The overacting with the long drawn out pronunciations just makes me want to scratch my eyes out. Terrible terrible terrible. I can’t tell if the book is even good because I can’t stand the narrator so much.

Narrator Kill It for Me!

I love the author's prior books! However good this book is the narrator ruined it for me. Her pronunciation of words destroyed it for me. It was so much that I can't concentrate on the story. I was quite disappointed with the narrator. E.E. Holmes, I love you and your writing. But I am sorry I just could not finish the book. May try to read but not anytime soon. I was disappointed. :(

Difficult to follow

From what I followed in the book, it seemed to be okay but, I was unable to get past the 5th chapter. I don’t normally give up on audiobooks that I spent good money on but, although the person that was reading the book had a very pleasant voice, she was very difficult to understand. I was hoping that once I was past the prologue, I would be able to understand and hear the narrators voice better but, this wasn’t to be the case. As an American, I sometimes struggle with thick British accents and the woman reading this book not only had a thick accent, she was difficult to hear in Some instances. Not only was it hard to understand but, due to her accent, some words were cut off or, her voice would become too low to hear. I had to rewind multiple times to a point where I couldn’t make it past the 5th chapter. I became so focused on trying to understand and hear the narrator that, in my frustration, I stopped listening to the story. I listen to audiobooks as I rarely have time to sit and read and audiobooks allow me listen while I work. I’m afraid that unless I find myself with an abundance of time, I won’t even be able to buy this book and actually sit and read it which is a shame as I really enjoy E.E Holmes books. It’s too bad, I was looking forward to this book.

Terrible Narrator

I had really been looking forward to this because I’d enjoyed the Gateway trilogy and the Gateway Trackers so much but the narrator reading this book is awful. I can’t concentrate on the story because the of way the narrator is reading. Very disappointed.

Awful narration

I have thoroughly enjoyed EE Holmes books and was looking forward to this book. The narration was so bad, I found it hard to listen to and understand what was happening in the book. Sadly the narration has completely ruined my experience and could not continue listening. Please, please get another narrator.

Sorry to be returning because of bad narration

Loved all EE Holmes books so far, love this book and story to read but the Narration is totally awful, one of the worst narrations ive ever "tried" to listen to, she reads the story like she is reading a bad young childrens scary book?? and sadly the narrator has a bad sibilance which was made worse by the long slow drawn out way she read the story, sad to not be able to listen this new book..
