Story
Something happened to me when I was nine. My childhood memories before that fateful day are gone. Extinguished. The aftermath has become a living nightmare with a guilt that runs so deep that I’m not sure I can ever tell anyone. I fear I've left it too late. The burden of my secret and the hurt and pain that silence cost each and every member of my family is too overwhelming. But you can't avoid fate and now I have the opportunity to right the wrongs inflicted on us. There was no justice. Not then. Not now. But I can change that.

It was an ordinary school day, the day I lost my little brother. One moment he was on the roundabout and then was gone. Gone. Missing. They all blamed me. I was in charge. Even though I was only ten years old. They sent me away. The hurt, the shame, the questions. The not knowing. I tried to move on. It’s been nineteen years in exile and now somebody wants me back. Story
It’s hard meeting your ex after so much time apart. You remember the tears and accusations, the desperate look on his face as he punched the wall, but you try not to show it. You smile politely, even while your heart beats faster. You watch as he looks down into the stroller, at the beautiful blond-haired, blue-eyed baby kicking his little legs in the sunshine, whose innocent smile lights up your world. You see his face change. You know what he’s thinking. The next day he calls. His voice is shaking. He wants the truth. Is it his child?

The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

First time for this Author
I was looking for something to read when I came across this book in the audible plus catalog. I am so glad I searched high and low for something to read last night. I was impressed and definitely not disappointed! If you like books with strong female characters and cops, this is your book! I am going back to read the first two books in the series and the one after this one.
What is it going to hurt to try this book? It’s free! All the characters in the police force are interesting. I cried many times for the little Chihuahua and for Poppy!

Did I miss something?
This could have been a better book if there where not so many unanswered loose ends which makes me wonder if they were really necessary for the plot. Simple answers about how did they find out who owned the dog, the drug ring, why the killer decided to commit suicide…answers would have made this much better.

Filled a listening gap. It was OK.
I had high hopes for the book but the best I can say is that it was OK. I did want to know how it finished but it wasn’t particularly gripping and a few bits were a little far fetched. I didn’t find there was much of an ending either.

What happened to the sub-plot???
A good story that grips you from the beginning, but a major sub plot just vanishes, never to be mentioned again! I'm wondering whether I made a cup of tea at the wrong time.
I also felt that the narrator was completely wrong for this book. I enjoyed Katy Sobey's voice, just not for what could have been a serious crime drama with gravitas. It's a little like how it might sound if Mr. Tumble were recounting a grisly murder.
All in all, it's a good listen as it was free, but I'm glad I didn't use a credit on it.

Promise unfulfilled
The premise had such promise...sadly the author focused almost entirely on tedious description of insignificant activities - many of which related to caffeine intake, to the exclusion of potentially interesting plot lines. Incredible coincidences piled on one after another as the detective seemed to focus on anything other than the job in hand. Shame.

This was my next book
The story was laid our for you right at the beginning and linked up and connected the characters from the past books .This book for me was more Jennas Morgan's journey and what shaped her and why .Because lot of the story was told at the beginning in detail it read quick even though there were many chapters .you didn't have to wait too long for it all to unfold and you new what was coming .With an unexpected hero .Possibly all tied up for another book as it feels like Jenna Morgan's next chapter is ready to start or another character close to Gemma that takes us forward . It's just how I saw it .I'm hoping there's another book .

Excellent
I really like this series. The book starts strongly and had me totally hooked, and continued at a fast pace as Jenna and her colleagues investigate a fire which killed a whole family, though we soon find out that things are not quite what they seem! The characters are well drawn, and I enjoyed getting to know more about Jenna, who is a brilliant character. I'd love to have her as a friend. I also love Ryan and love the banter between him and Jenna. It was also great to see Domino and his doggy friends feature prominently in this book :-)
Katy Sobey does a great job with the narration, and I can't wait to listen to Book 4.

Brilliantly written Excellent!!
A must read. Such a well told story. Sensitive but strong in the rough parts, but doesn’t pull any punches either.
Dianne Saxon I choose you as my next favourite crime author ✍️ and I’ve read a lot of them.
You picked an excellent narrator too. Her tone and emotions came thru her voice. I often find complaints with narrators, but Katy Sobey, you’re brilliant.

A bit of everything.
Such a good story. Suspense, murder, romance and camaraderie. Add a good cup of insanity along with love and care and you’ve got a ripper of a yarn.

Crime drama
This is well read by narrator, accents can be interesting at times.
The story is intriguing and continues with the partnership of Jenna and Mason, as they work their way through the crime. Sometimes a little short on the investigation part and more about the people and relationships this is still enjoyable. Probably not appealing to die hard crime fiction fans though as little procedural details.

Story
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.
