Publisher's Summary

Perfect for fans of Cara Hunter.

Why does someone want the Lawrence family dead?

The Lawrences were the perfect family; successful, beautiful and happy until one night their whole world was ripped apart.

Detective Sergeant Jenna Morgan is called to investigate the suspected arson attack and death of the Lawrence family at the charred remains of their stunning home, Kimble Hall.

The case takes a sinister turn as the body count fails to tally.

Suspecting that someone may have survived the inferno, DS Morgan and her team need to discover whether they have a witness or someone far more dangerous.

Who set the fire? Who wanted this family extinguished beyond recognition?

As the case progresses, DS Morgan realises she has a calculating, cold-blooded killer on her hands, and the race is on to track them down before they kill again.

First time for this Author

I was looking for something to read when I came across this book in the audible plus catalog. I am so glad I searched high and low for something to read last night. I was impressed and definitely not disappointed! If you like books with strong female characters and cops, this is your book! I am going back to read the first two books in the series and the one after this one.
What is it going to hurt to try this book? It’s free! All the characters in the police force are interesting. I cried many times for the little Chihuahua and for Poppy!

Each one better than the last!

I continue to enjoy this series and hope that it goes for a very long time! DS Jenna Morgan is an amazing main character and I love her interactions with her sister and coworkers! Without giving anything away, tears were shed multiple times but smiles are aplenty too! I highly recommend this series!

Did I miss something?

This could have been a better book if there where not so many unanswered loose ends which makes me wonder if they were really necessary for the plot. Simple answers about how did they find out who owned the dog, the drug ring, why the killer decided to commit suicide…answers would have made this much better.

Fair

While you typically like descriptive writing, this author takes it so far that it just becomes annoying, if not comical and really took away from the story.

Story line lost

Starts with murder snd fire then wanders off on drugs, making you wonder if the first story line would be concluded. Drug plot added nothing. Not as good as her first book in this series.

What She Saw

The second book I have read now from this author and loving her stories. The murders are solved well and enjoy the romance included in. The dog is always good. The narration is very good.

pleasantly surprised

This story was adventurous! I liked how all of the storylines interwove to show how exhausted the main character was throughout the story. The performance of the reader was also captivating. I enjoyed her accent and the different voices she used to discern the characters!

Storyline good

Way too much fluff and repeat. Just when the story was getting exciting, more fluff unnecessary details—to the point of rambling.

Filled a listening gap. It was OK.

I had high hopes for the book but the best I can say is that it was OK. I did want to know how it finished but it wasn’t particularly gripping and a few bits were a little far fetched. I didn’t find there was much of an ending either.

What happened to the sub-plot???

A good story that grips you from the beginning, but a major sub plot just vanishes, never to be mentioned again! I'm wondering whether I made a cup of tea at the wrong time.
I also felt that the narrator was completely wrong for this book. I enjoyed Katy Sobey's voice, just not for what could have been a serious crime drama with gravitas. It's a little like how it might sound if Mr. Tumble were recounting a grisly murder.
All in all, it's a good listen as it was free, but I'm glad I didn't use a credit on it.

Promise unfulfilled

The premise had such promise...sadly the author focused almost entirely on tedious description of insignificant activities - many of which related to caffeine intake, to the exclusion of potentially interesting plot lines. Incredible coincidences piled on one after another as the detective seemed to focus on anything other than the job in hand. Shame.

Off putting narrator!

Story was interesting enough but the absolutely awful attempts at accents by the narrator 100% put me off for the entire story. Black Country sounded part Welsh, part Yorkshire.

A real PERFORMANCE of a strong story

This is the third Diane Saxon in the series & having read all 3 back to back I'm off now to use one of my Credits to pur hase book 4. Strong, likeable characters, real drama & suspense, properly performed by Katy Sobey who does a really good job with a clear voice. I am hooked!

This was my next book

The story was laid our for you right at the beginning and linked up and connected the characters from the past books .This book for me was more Jennas Morgan's journey and what shaped her and why .Because lot of the story was told at the beginning in detail it read quick even though there were many chapters .you didn't have to wait too long for it all to unfold and you new what was coming .With an unexpected hero .Possibly all tied up for another book as it feels like Jenna Morgan's next chapter is ready to start or another character close to Gemma that takes us forward . It's just how I saw it .I'm hoping there's another book .

Excellent

I really like this series. The book starts strongly and had me totally hooked, and continued at a fast pace as Jenna and her colleagues investigate a fire which killed a whole family, though we soon find out that things are not quite what they seem! The characters are well drawn, and I enjoyed getting to know more about Jenna, who is a brilliant character. I'd love to have her as a friend. I also love Ryan and love the banter between him and Jenna. It was also great to see Domino and his doggy friends feature prominently in this book :-)

Katy Sobey does a great job with the narration, and I can't wait to listen to Book 4.

Thoroughly enjoyed the story. The detective & her sidekicks were likeable characters with their own little side stories but didn’t distract from the main storyline.

Good story spoilt by annoyingly long descriptions

The underlying storyline despite being predictable is interesting enough to hold attention. However I found that the unnecessarily long and drawn-out descriptions detracted from the pace and were annoying rather than adding to the atmosphere.

Brilliantly written Excellent!!

A must read. Such a well told story. Sensitive but strong in the rough parts, but doesn’t pull any punches either.
Dianne Saxon I choose you as my next favourite crime author ✍️ and I’ve read a lot of them.
You picked an excellent narrator too. Her tone and emotions came thru her voice. I often find complaints with narrators, but Katy Sobey, you’re brilliant.

Crime drama

This is well read by narrator, accents can be interesting at times.
The story is intriguing and continues with the partnership of Jenna and Mason, as they work their way through the crime. Sometimes a little short on the investigation part and more about the people and relationships this is still enjoyable. Probably not appealing to die hard crime fiction fans though as little procedural details.
