Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave.

They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.

Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price.

But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way—even if it kills her.

Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.

What Lies Between Us is one of the most dark and compelling psychological thrillers I’ve read this year. The story is seriously so messed up told between two unreliable narrators. Who do you believe? Who shall you trust? The story is disturbing and told from two point of views within multiple timelines. POV from Maggie and Nina, between the past and the present. Confusing? No, not at all. John Marrs is seriously becoming one of my all time favorite authors! His storytelling abilities is out of this world!!! His writing is so addiction leaving me wanting more and more. I highly recommend this one!!

Captivating!

Alistair Simmons, a civil engineer, and his wife Maggie, a medical office receptionist, live in Northampton, UK, with their teenage daughter Nina. When Alistair decides to leave Maggie, his decision triggers a series of events that, after many years, results in Maggie being a prisoner in her own home. The book explores Nina's relationship with her mother and Maggie and Nina's psychological pathology. Gradually the family secrets come out, and they are anything but pleasant. Maggie and Nina tell the story in the first person, and it's a bit hard to accept this was written by a man. Elizabeth Knowelden does a superb job of narration. I was expecting a different type of resolution at the end, which accounts for only a 4-star overall review.

An Engaging but Sad Story

I'm reading it again to see what I missed the first time. I didn't really like it through the first half and then 'wham', everything started to fall into place. It is dark and although I understand why certain things were done, I'm horrified that it was done. I love books that make me think and this one sure did. Excellent narrator and good creepy story.

Twisted and dark but fascinating

Once you get into the backgrounds of Nina and Maggie it starts to come together. Then hang on! That's all I'm gonna say - takes "crazy" to a new level and really held my interest! Finished in 24 hours Will need to check out this author's other titles.

WOULD MAKE A GREAT MOVIE !

Think Harlequin romance, meets psycho meets, meets cliche after tired well trodden cliche.
The book doesn't shock, awe, or terrify .. there is no suspense. The plot is fairly transparent very early on
From that juncture it is just sad, gross and although I feel the writer is going for sick psychopathic depravity at it's glory
.. its just meh & predictable. The narrator does a decent job with what she has to work with. Her male voices aren't that great
but that is always the case.

Kind of just sad & gross

On the plus side, this is a fast-paced book with two well-defined characters. Unfortunately, I hated both of them, and the storyline surpassed my ability to suspend my disbelief. So glad to have finished this sadistic tale--hope my next book is more engaging..

Well-written but really nasty

It took me a little bit to get into the story but once I did I was hooked. I wasn’t sure who to root for in the story, as I couldn’t figure out who the “good guy” was.

I’m not sure what some of these negative reviews are talking about? Not sure where the incest was unless I missed that part? It is a pretty depressing story, but I don’t think it was meant to be happy.

If you’re looking for a story to keep you constantly guessing and in my opinion, unpredictable, then this is for you. I really enjoyed the story.

A good listen

This book was a good listen. I enjoyed the narrator and the story like very much. I think some of the ending details could have been better.

Good, but ending was disappointing
