Publisher's Summary

This program is read by the author, and includes a bonus interview.

The riveting story of how a young boy's upbringing with outlaw culture and charismatic role models forged him into an elite Marine and a decorated Pararescueman.

"Absence of self is my sword" comprises the final line in "The Warrior's Creed," a 14th century poem written by an unknown Japanese Samurai, and this is the code Master Sergeant Roger Sparks embodied as a Recon Marine turned Alaskan Pararescueman. A living legend in the military, Sparks first made a name for himself within elite Marine Reconnaissance units. He went on to become an instructor where he trained future Reconnaissance Marines with unorthodox and ancient indigenous warrior techniques. A decade later, the same methods would keep him and others alive, when he hoisted into a maelstrom of violence to rescue an embattled platoon in the rugged mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

Introduced to a tough code of honor, family, and brotherhood from birth, Roger Sparks rose to become a distinguished instructor in Marine Reconnaissance and a Silver Star recipient as an Alaska Pararescueman. A raw and exhilarating tale of guts, grit, and heart, Warrior's Creed recounts the hidden side of special operations training, heroic and heartbreaking Alaskan wilderness rescues, and the surreal and deadly rescues during Operation Bulldog Bite in Afghanistan’s Watapur Valley.

This powerful and inspirational story is as much of a self-help book as it is an edge of your seat military memoir. Warrior's Creed reveals a motivating and mindful approach to overcoming the odds, facing the impossible, and finding mercy and grace in the aftermath.

Fantastic book

Joing the USAF specifically to become a PJ and not having that even offered to our squadron I found this book to be amazing for so many reasons. I also lived in Eagle River so a great deal of it was familiar to me. I hope to someday meet the author, truly a humble hero. Well written, well read.

I wept.

As a gritty combat veteran myself, I was moved beyond words. Incredibly raw, honest, and insightful. This story is one that should be read by all and taught in school. Thank you Roger for sharing the deepest parts of your soul.

Vivid, Inspirational and Cathartic

Regardless of your background, there is so much you will take from this man’s personal reflection of his life and career of service. Whether you are struggling with your own past or trying to comprehend why others do what they do, Roger Sparks’ story is vivid, inspirational and cathartic. I didn’t know I needed to read this. More synchronicity or serendipity I suppose.

Stories of pushing through.

I am a pacifist, yet this book gave me a new sense of what it means to be a warrior. In this time of COVID-19, we are all called to be warriors. Roger Sparks read his book with captivating exuberance sharing his stories with honesty and vulnerability. I was surprised by what I learned about myself.

Warriors Creed is Profound

This book has had a profound impact on me, from Roger's struggle with injury to his stoicism in the face of almost certain death. Warriors creed struck a chord in me, though at some point all men suffer, it is those who embrace their suffering that grows from it.

Roger Sparks reads this book with all the weight it must carry for him, his words sound as if they are coming from his soul, it is an extraordinary story, filled with extraordinary people. I feel enriched having listened to it.

A Must Listen/ Read for anyone who inspires to join the military or to find a path for self-improvement through sacrifice and struggle.
