Thandiwe Newton is Superb

I too was put off at first by Thandiwe Newton’s style of narration. It seemed like she was yelling a lot—especially for the male characters. But stick with it—she
settles down and gets better and better. She is especially good at creating a different, believable voice for each character. As far as the novel itself, it’s greatness
can’t be overstated. And Thandiwe Newton gives an epic performance worthy of it.

Simply the best read audiobook.

Tolstoy has and always will be an undeniable corner stone of literature and thanks to to the incredible talent of Thandiwe Newton I found the narrative very approachable and entertaining.

I thought I would explore this timeless classic and made it most of the way through Book 3 and I'm done.

I never would have touched this had it not been for Audible. Terrific narration. Amazing history our current world seems to be repeating.

I have wanted to read this book for years.
I was not disappointed. Epic story

An Epic Novel

I had read this novel 55 years ago in college. I decided to revisit it by listening to the audiobook. Since I listened only an hour or so a day, it took me 5 months to get through the entire book. Tolstoy integrates the home scenes and battle scenes masterfully. His characterization is wonderful especially for Andrei, Natalya and Pierre. I could really feel for the characters - Tolstoy brought the Russian aristocracy to life, the parties, the home life of the early 19th century. He is just as masterful bringing the chaos and confusion of the battlefields - his analysis of Napoleon is interesting. I enjoyed some of his philosophical musings, but the 2nd Epilogue can be a slog. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful historical novel and well worth the time and effort to read.

Thandiwe Newton's narration is like listening to a play - she has a voice for every character; the listener really becomes engrossed in the story. Well done and a herculean effort!

Of the classic Russian novels, I think this one is best suited for the audiobook format. Worth the time.
