  4. Waite on the Angel of Death - a black-magic-showdown with an entire plane
  5. Waite on the Trail of Terror - the ride through a house of horrors to die for

Intense!

Waite on the Ripper was a phenomenal start to The Celestial Wars series. The premise is refreshing, and the storyline is incredibly gripping, intense, suspenseful, and wholly satisfying. The world-building is excellent with all the essential ingredients to make a captivating storyline, murder investigation, supernatural elements and strong characters; immediately, I was drawn in. Despite the length, John Campbell has done an unbelievable job with character development. The MC, and the supporting characters, were well-rounded, capable, each contributing a unique skill and diversity to the plot. I can't wait for the rest of the series!

This was my first time listening to Dan Johnson; I thought he did a stellar job portraying the characters and bringing Campbell's words to life. His voice was particularly well suited for Harmon; I could thoroughly picture him in my head. Overall, this was a very entertaining listen, one I highly recommend. I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A Texas sized good time.

A surprisingly delightful hard boiled detective novel performed with great finesse. A nice tribute to Austin and overall a lot of fun. Doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and leaves you wanting more while giving a satisfying ending. Easy recommendation to Austinites and anyone who likes a blend of supernatural with their noire.

Fantastic

I totally loved this audiobook! And I am thrilled to see that it is a series and Campbell already has five books on audio. I'm so excited. I can't wait for more! I just wish the books were a little longer. But that just me. :)

John is such a talented writer!

John is such a talented writer! This was my first book in this genre, and the story is so engaging and full of tension - nearly every chapter ends on a cliffhanger. The descriptions of hell were terrifying, fresh, and so believable. And not to mention the narration was ON POINT and really brought this story to life!

A different take on "Jack the Ripper"

Boy, there is a lot packed into this short book at 3.5 hours long. I enjoyed listening to this book. The narration was excellent. The story is strange, interesting, full of action. Not what one would expect with a "Jack the Ripper" story. I look forward to the sequel.

A great beginning to the series

Waite on the Ripper is a fantastic introduction to The Celestial Wars series. Through the investigation of the murder of a young girl, we are introduced to each of the main characters and what their special talents are. There’s a great good vs evil plot line.

Both the author and narrator are new to me, and I was quite impressed. John Campbell did a great job with presenting the details and building the characters up. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next.

Dan Johnson has the perfect voice for Harmon Waite. Exactly how I imagined he would sound.

Good story but heavy on religion

Good story but very heavy on religion which is probably why I couldn't get into this book. A lot of action happened within a short space of time but it was paced well within this short book. I feel that the lead character Waite adapted too quickly to his new powers and accepted the seemingly shocking revelations of his new supernatural environment too quickly after having no previous experience with it before. Also using his new powers came too easy for Waite, he seemed to know instantly what to do and that didn't seem very plausible to me. I liked what a gentleman Waite was and how he treated women, he was a very likable character, as well as all the other main characters. The book ends well setting all of them up to continue fighting evil. It was a good introduction to the series. I'm not sure I got used to the narrators deep rumbling voice, but he did a great job at narrating this book.

Although this book didn't appeal to me I'm sure it will appeal to many others and is worth a try.

Excellent story well narrated

An excellent story. This is a good start to this series with an entertaining story. Unsurprisingly with the subject it has a very religious tone which can become a little over the top on the odd occasion. It is however a great fast paced, action packed read. I particularly enjoyed the last section which gave some great backstory on some of the main characters. Dan Johnson does an excellent job with the narration.

concept

overall the concept was good with the world building. The only thing I didn't care for too much is that it was a little to religious for my liking.

I absolutely loved this book!

I absolutely loved this book!
The style of writing is reminiscent of old detective novels told from the first person perspective, and it really works so well here.
The concept is the age old story of Good versus Evil, fought out by angels and fallen angels. The former gave birth to the human race, the latter brought forth demons and now they intend to start a war using Earth as their battle ground.

This first novel introduces us to Harmon Waite, the main protagonist, who is starting out as private investigator. His long time friend and local police detective Molly, who is officially working the case, picks him up on her way to the crime scene of a murdered girl, informing him that an old friend and father of the victim wants him to find the perpetrator. They discover that she is not the only victim and there is a serial killer at work. Strange things are happening around and to Waite and they seem to be connected to the case. He meets Smoke, a stoic half Cherokee and mountain of a man, who helps him out of a sticky situation and then encounters Eirian, an elf-like, sword wielding woman, who saves him from purgatory and sheds light on the identity of the murderer – who is non other than Jack the Ripper. The three band together to take on the mass murderer and during the hunt Harmon learns a lot about his and his companion’s heritage and that there is far more to the case than he could ever have imagined.

The characters are vibrant and intriguing, the world building is inspired and the plot well thought out. Expect fast paced action, supernatural revelations, unexpected twists and heart rendering stories.
What a wonderful kick-off for a series of books.

The narrator Dan Johnson has a deep, sort of gruff voice, which took on a laid-back, ‘lazy’ tone, when I slowed the playback speed down a bit (he spoke a little too fast for me). This was perfect for the first person narrative and put me in mind of Humphrey Bogart’s Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep.

I received this book in audio book format from the author and am leaving this review of my own volition.

OMG talk about good versus evil!

I’m not going to repeat what you can read in the summary what I’m going to say is Harmons Best friend a detective for the Austin PD, Marley. Call Tim to a murder scene in the middle of the night. The father of the dead girl someone Harmon Watch grow up from a teenager to a grown woman and had A soft spot for, well her father wants the immediately on the case. He is a private guy whose reputation precedes him in some circles and it does with the victims father. Due to Providence he will meet smoke on the mountain and eventually realize It is not a flesh and blood man but the long dead Jack the ripper and then some. It is only with the help of the thought Indian smoke on the water, his best friend Molly In a quiet but confident girl name Ira And he’s going to need their help along with his newly realized powers that he never knew he had. This book is so so awesome. I might’ve messed up on the summary, but just know I read this book until I couldn’t hold my eyes open last night and then finished it this morning. I cannot wait to get Book two Waiting On The Blind Angel. The narrator who did an awesome awesome job will be back he is the perfect voice for Harmon wait and I Highly recommend this book if you like science fiction good against evil and people who are the pitta me a good fighting demons from hell you’re going to love this book. That isn’t even my favorite genre and I loved it! It is so worth the credit.
