Story
Show me an amateur conjurer, and I'll stop him before he gets himself killed. That's the idea, anyway. But New York City isn't what it used to be, and I don't mean the recent crash. Amateur casters are calling up creatures they shouldn't be able to. And there's been a murder at the city's most hallowed cathedral, a message in blood on the victim's back the NYPD wants me to interpret, like yesterday.

Intense!
Waite on the Ripper was a phenomenal start to The Celestial Wars series. The premise is refreshing, and the storyline is incredibly gripping, intense, suspenseful, and wholly satisfying. The world-building is excellent with all the essential ingredients to make a captivating storyline, murder investigation, supernatural elements and strong characters; immediately, I was drawn in. Despite the length, John Campbell has done an unbelievable job with character development. The MC, and the supporting characters, were well-rounded, capable, each contributing a unique skill and diversity to the plot. I can't wait for the rest of the series!
This was my first time listening to Dan Johnson; I thought he did a stellar job portraying the characters and bringing Campbell's words to life. His voice was particularly well suited for Harmon; I could thoroughly picture him in my head. Overall, this was a very entertaining listen, one I highly recommend. John is such a talented writer! This was my first book in this genre, and the story is so engaging and full of tension - nearly every chapter ends on a cliffhanger. A great beginning to the series
Waite on the Ripper is a fantastic introduction to The Celestial Wars series. Through the investigation of the murder of a young girl, we are introduced to each of the main characters and what their special talents are. There’s a great good vs evil plot line.
Both the author and narrator are new to me, and I was quite impressed. John Campbell did a great job with presenting the details and building the characters up. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next.
Dan Johnson has the perfect voice for Harmon Waite. Exactly how I imagined he would sound.

Good story but heavy on religion
Good story but very heavy on religion which is probably why I couldn't get into this book. A lot of action happened within a short space of time but it was paced well within this short book. I feel that the lead character Waite adapted too quickly to his new powers and accepted the seemingly shocking revelations of his new supernatural environment too quickly after having no previous experience with it before. Also using his new powers came too easy for Waite, he seemed to know instantly what to do and that didn't seem very plausible to me. I liked what a gentleman Waite was and how he treated women, he was a very likable character, as well as all the other main characters. The book ends well setting all of them up to continue fighting evil. It was a good introduction to the series. I'm not sure I got used to the narrators deep rumbling voice, but he did a great job at narrating this book.
Although this book didn't appeal to me I'm sure it will appeal to many others and is worth a try.

Excellent story well narrated
An excellent story. This is a good start to this series with an entertaining story. Unsurprisingly with the subject it has a very religious tone which can become a little over the top on the odd occasion. It is however a great fast paced, action packed read. I particularly enjoyed the last section which gave some great backstory on some of the main characters. Dan Johnson does an excellent job with the narration.

I absolutely loved this book!
I absolutely loved this book!
The style of writing is reminiscent of old detective novels told from the first person perspective, and it really works so well here.
The concept is the age old story of Good versus Evil, fought out by angels and fallen angels. The former gave birth to the human race, the latter brought forth demons and now they intend to start a war using Earth as their battle ground.
This first novel introduces us to Harmon Waite, the main protagonist, who is starting out as private investigator. His long time friend and local police detective Molly, who is officially working the case, picks him up on her way to the crime scene of a murdered girl, informing him that an old friend and father of the victim wants him to find the perpetrator. They discover that she is not the only victim and there is a serial killer at work. Strange things are happening around and to Waite and they seem to be connected to the case. He meets Smoke, a stoic half Cherokee and mountain of a man, who helps him out of a sticky situation and then encounters Eirian, an elf-like, sword wielding woman, who saves him from purgatory and sheds light on the identity of the murderer – who is non other than Jack the Ripper. The three band together to take on the mass murderer and during the hunt Harmon learns a lot about his and his companion’s heritage and that there is far more to the case than he could ever have imagined.
The characters are vibrant and intriguing, the world building is inspired and the plot well thought out. Expect fast paced action, supernatural revelations, unexpected twists and heart rendering stories.
What a wonderful kick-off for a series of books.
The narrator Dan Johnson has a deep, sort of gruff voice, which took on a laid-back, ‘lazy’ tone, when I slowed the playback speed down a bit (he spoke a little too fast for me). This was perfect for the first person narrative and put me in mind of Humphrey Bogart’s Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep.
I received this book in audio book format from the author and am leaving this review of my own volition.
