Publisher's Summary

A desperate princess, a magical traveler, and a watch that binds them together with the fate of a dying world.

Vi Solaris is the heir to an Empire she’s barely seen. Her parents sacrificed a life with her to quell a rebellion and secure peace with a political alliance. Now, three years past when her wardship should’ve ended, Vi will do anything to be reunited with her family.

The Empire is faltering beneath the burden of political infighting and a deadly plague. Yet, Vi can’t help but wonder if her inability to control her magic is the true reason her parents haven’t brought her home. Suspicion becomes reality when she unleashes powers she’s not supposed to have.

Powers that might well cost her the throne.

As Vi fights to get her magic under control, a mysterious stranger appears from across the world. He holds the keys to unlocking her full potential, but the knowledge has an unspeakable price - some truths, once seen, cannot be ignored.

All eyes are on her, and Vi must make the hardest choice of her life: Play by the rules and claim her throne. Or, break them and save the world.

If you enjoy epic fantasy stories with sorcery, slow-burn romance, and expansive worlds to adventure in, then you’ll love the Vortex Chronicles.

Book-hangover worthy author

This was my first audiobook. I was leery to try them thinking I would space out and not pay attention but the story catches your attention and holds it! I absolutely loved the Air Awakens series and had a book hangover for weeks after finishing it. It’s so great to be back in the Solaris world again!

Vortex Visions review

Thrilling and captivating, Vortex Visions Air Awakens: Vortex Chronicles, Book 1 by author Elise Kova and narrated by Sarah Sampino, a fantasy story tells the tale of main character Vi Solaris. With it’s unique characters and remarkable writing, I actually enjoyed listening to this, it’s interesting, and well worth the time in continuing on with the series.

Loved This!!!

Hearing Vi brought to life like this was breathtaking! I was utterly captivated by the beautiful narration. I love this series so much. Vi totally has my heart as does Taavan! This was loaded with surprises that left me stunned and I admit freely that I'm begging for more! Elise Kova is so brilliant and one of my faves!!

It Was Love at First Sight

From the moment I first saw this book, I knew I would enjoy it with every fiber of my being. I am absolutely enraptured by the amount of care and description Kova uses in her writing. I was entranced from start to finish. I have a deep appreciation for magic systems and religion/deities in fantasy novels, because they're both ways to express utmost creativity. The world building O got to enjoy was absolutely beautiful.

I'm a long-time fan of the Graceling trilogy by Kristin Cashier, but I do believe Elise Kova has overtaken my favorites with Vortex Visions!

Sarah Sampino did the most wonderful job. This novel would not be the same without her skill. I loved the accents, they sounded real and authentic and I loved the different voices for each character, as they were consistent and helped me just enjoy listening instead of wondering who was talking.

Thank you for making one of my favorite reads to date!

Despite 3 Star, I Will Read Book 2

Vortex Visions by Elise Kova was an enjoyable book for me. It follows Vi Solaris, who is somewhat a prisoner and somewhat a bargaining chip in a larger game. What we find out almost immediately is that she is slated to become the next emperor as she was born minutes before her twin brother. The logistics of why she was sent to grow up in the southern kingdom away from her family was not something that seemed to be clearly articulated; however, in the grand scheme of things, it did not matter. What does matter is that she comes from a line of powerful fire-bears and she is next-in-line—that is if she can awaken the powerful magic dwelling deep within.

Spoiler, not really, chapter one establishes that Vi is struggling to unlock her magic and is no closer to figuring it out then she was when she first was told she had fire magic. Now, as a reader, I am expecting the rest of the book to be about her trying to figure it out and being unsuccessful until some climax event towards the end of the book. Well, in chapter two under the most uneventful circumstance, Vi unlocks her magic, the end, and the reader is left unsatisfied, right? Wrong. Even though her magic is unlocked, she is still unable to control it which drives the rest of the story.

Now, there are a lot of other characters we are introduced to, and honestly, none of them are really worth mentioning, except for Taven. On Vi’s birthday, she is allowed to leave her “prison” and go for a hunt, which really is more about her enjoying a few days of freedom with her adoptive sister, and her best-friend turned royal guard. Some stuff happens and then she finds herself in a ruined where she sees a vision as well as meets Taven. In truth, this is a really strange slow-building relationship that at this point is cliché. I am hoping as the series goes on it does not end the way I predict because that would be disappointing. That said, I find myself interested in this character because the way he is introduced causes the reader to ask a lot of questions that are slowly answered as the story proceeds.

Here is what I like about the story, it is entertaining and the narrator on audible adds a good level of depth. It does a good job of establishing the series and allows room for speculation. What I absolutely hated about this book is the cliché relationship developing between Vi and Taven, the places where the predictability is too obvious, the fact the moment she unlocks her magic is nothing special, and that the true conflict of the story is not introduced until halfway through the story. This is not to say there is no conflict until this point, there is, but it is secondary and forgetful once the reader knows what the real issue is.

All things considered, I will be reading the second book in this series shortly. Like I said in the beginning, I really did enjoy this book; however, as a standalone, this book falls into the grey zone between making it and not making it on my bookshelf. I say this because I would definitely have it around and suggest my nieces or daughters read it as I am sure they would enjoy it, but for me, there are just certain things it is lacking. That said, I will not grade this book alone, but will reserve judgment and make a final recommendation on the series as a whole to determine if it will make it on my bookshelf.

Unique ideas and great narration!

Really enjoyed the magic parts and how Vi and Tavvin are connected; it’s an interesting idea how they communicate with magical means. The beginning is slow to start, but does pick up once Vi’s powers start showing themselves. I haven’t read the previous series that this one is a spin-off of, but I enjoyed this anyway. I do think I may have had a better emotional connection to the characters if I had though, but it’s a plus that I didn’t have any preconceived expectations.

I listened to the audio and the narrator did a great job. She really fit the character of Vi; her voice felt right for the character. I’d recommend it!

Vi has a bit of that naive princess thing going on, but luckily, she starts to mature some. I really don’t get why she feels she can’t be truthful with people about her powers. I might have missed the reason why, but it seemed rather pointless to not discuss it with anyone. The reason she’s kept from her family is stupid as well. She really didn’t need to be away from them since birth; she was supposed to be training or something like that, but that doesn’t happen till she’s older. Vi could’ve stayed with her family till she was in her teens before having to leave, so that whole thing didn’t make sense. I also didn’t like that it seems she may have to have an arranged marriage; that probably won’t happen, but I expect better from parents who went through something similar.

The white death stuff was entertaining and added some much needed action. This book felt like a set-up book towards the adventure and fun to be had, so I’m hoping the next book will have more of that. Also, after reading some reviews that mentioned how disappointed they were about what happened to Vi’s father; I’m thinking they must not have read the whole book because there’s hope on that front, so don’t let that deter you as of yet.

Overall, entertaining and unique with a lot of potential for adventure.

Amazing 1st book to a new series

This book was amazing. I was sucked in from the beginning. The main character grows so much in this first book that I can not wait to see what happens next. This story has little romance at least in this book. This is very much an action packed fantasy.

The narrator did an amazing job and I will be looking forward to her narration for the rebate of the series.

Excellent book

This is the first book by this author that I have had the privilege to read/listen to and let me say I will be reading the Air Awakens series eventually. With plenty of magic and mystery to keep you on the edge of your seat the entire book you can tell that the characters and world building meld perfectly together. I have grown to love this narrator as I totally enjoy how she handles the different characters in the books.

Awesome novel, Definitely worth a listen

I loved the novel. I read the previous Air Awakens series but so I enjoyed reading about characters from the previous story as well as new ones. I don’t think it’s necessary to read the first series but you defiantly get more out of the story if you do.
I love audio books, and so was excited to listen to this book on audio. I thought the narrator did a good job but having a male narrator for the portions that dealt with a male counter part to Vi would have enhanced the listening experience.
Over all I would defiantly recommend this novel to anyone who likes fantasy novels. It’s addicting and leaves you wanting more.

This will grab your vision

First in a series . The story has many levels , right when you think you know where the story is heading the author throws another direction that will have you glued till the end . This is a great fantasy book that is full of magic . You need a strong character to know how to control the elements to do what is needed .

Heroine is Vi .
Vi is promised to someone by her parents before she is even born . Vi is sent away from home , she’s sent North it’s only suppose to be for a certain amount of time but 14 yrs come and gone. Vi is wondering if she will ever go where she is suppose to. Vi is even more wondering what she can do when her magic shows a new element . Does she go home and marry who she is suppose to

Sarah performance is perfect. Her magic with her voice telling this story is strong, clear and smooth

Loved it!

The world created in Vortex Visions is unique and very interesting. There seems to be so much to explore and discover. I’m excited to do just that with Vi Solaris and her friends.
Vi is a young girl coming into herself. She has a great amount of power that she is just beginning to understand. She also has a connection with a man that she has never met but their destinies are intertwined. I really enjoyed watching their connection grow and evolve into something more.
Vi’s friends are wonderful. They are supportive and protective of her but I’m wondering if Vi will have to continue her quest without them.
It was a pleasure to begin this journey with Vi and her friends. I can not wait to find out what magical, thrilling and death-defying adventures lay ahead for everyone.

Even better in audio

I’ve already read this whole series but was excited to listen on audible. I remember thinking the first book was my least favorite - that it was a bit slow as the series and characters were introduced. Listening to it on audio, that was not the case! I could hardly shut it off and listened to all 10+ hours in less than 2 days. The narrator brought the book to life in a way my imagination couldn’t.
This is one of my fav series and I highly recommend it!

A magical story!

The author has a wonderful imagination and an artist at telling a Sci-fi story. The author writes and wonderful story that you can get lost in. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. I definitely recommend this book to everyone that loves a great Sci-fi story.

Sarah Sampino narration brings the characters to life for me. She is definitely awesome at the voices of the characters in each story she narrator’s. Her persona of each individual character is very entertaining with heartfelt emotions.
