Nice holiday listen (except if you're pregnant)

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, but not the ones about to have a baby. It's for fans of books like Gone Girl.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I saw it coming early on and unfortunately think it would have been better to read because the voices gave away the twist before you're meant to know what's going on. I think this is the first time ever a thriller twist hasn't worked in audio.

What does Clare Corbett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love how her voice rose and fell to indicate tension, confusion, etc.

Any additional comments?

It's a great holiday read but if you've read other books in this genre you'll figure out the twist early on. Still, I wanted to see how it played out and that was enjoyable enough.

Rather tedious

Is there anything you would change about this book?

This audiobook started off pretty well and for the first half, despite the now rather tired psychological thriller setting, I was gripped. However it became rather tedious, farcical and unbelievable. At times it was well written but in places it was simple, cliche ridden chick lit. Also, I really did not like any of the characters and found it hard to summon up any interest in their lives.

Would you be willing to try another book from Samantha Hayes? Why or why not?

Possibly.

What about Clare Corbett’s performance did you like?

Clare Corbett is one of my favourite narrators and on the whole she narrates this well. However, the voice of Claudia really grated on me and the male voices were not quite convincing.

Do you think Until You're Mine needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes there could definitely be a follow up. I think Samantha Hayes has prepared us for this by introducing the detectives Lorraine and Adam and exploring their personal lives.

Standard issue thriller

Having really enjoyed The Reunion, I readily tried another by this author. Nowhere near the same standard, perhaps result of this being an earlier book. It’s not bad: interesting enough plot but very formulaic. There was no particular twist: or if there was, it was a bit obvious and telegraphed. The characters were not very deeply drawn; almost as though they needed another pass at them. Really pointless and uninteresting subplot about police officer’s home life with her unfaithful husband and brattish daughter which added nothing at all. Would rather the acreage had been used to work on the main plot and crank the sinister edge up a bit.

Narration was okay... Annoying Brummie accents I could have lived without and it teetered on the brink of “doing voice” a bit too often but I’ve heard worse.

The most annoying characters and unrealistic story

A good thriller is clever and deceives the reader with misdirection - this one outright lies to you. All the women are pathetic. This was a waste of 11 hours of my life.

What a shock!! Amazing!!

Rarely does an audio book have me jumping around shouting as I listen to it. This audiobook had me gripped from the start and plot twist was fantastic. The narrator was superb and I never found myself irritated by her voice. Great choice.
I have tried very hard to find another book that comes close and they are all disappointing and lacklustre in comparison. I can't wait for more of her books to be available on here. Please release your other titles on Audible Samantha...I need more!!

I didnt believe a word of it

I purchased this book as highly recommended by a friend and it has had some really good reviews on Amazon.
I feel the narrator was excellent and really helped move the plot along.
The plot however I found tedious and somehow not ‘real’ to life from the outset. The way the characters were acting made me feel that the whole thing was fake.
For more than half the book nothing really happens as it is just building to the conclusion, which really can be guessed from the beginning.
Telling the story from the perspective of Zoe (the nanny) Claudia (the pregnant woman) and Lorraine (the Police detective) dilutes the overall effect and makes it that no empathy is felt for any of them. Reading about Claudia and her husband James I felt that their lives and behaviours as presented did not ring through. From the offset I feel the plot was easy to see although the author tried to hide it with ‘red herrings’ which really were not at all ‘red’
James lost his first wife shortly after giving birth to twin boys and within a short time he is living with Claudia and then Claudia is heavily pregnant but not really saying when the baby is due and he is home on leave. The baby is supposedly very precious and long wished for yet even though Claudia is ‘heavily’ pregnant with no clear due date James trots off back to sea where no one can reach him without seeing his much wished for baby. The ‘nanny’ Zoe is presented as a strange character and what you are asked to believe of her as the story plods along does not ring through. It is evident that she is not what she appears to be but when it is revealed who she is it is just another situation of ‘really what is the reason for that plot within the current one’! The two Police officers have their own sub story with their daughter, which again is maybe there to confuse the reader to the main plot. In effect all these plots just add another layer of ‘going down an alley for no good reason’.
It has been compared to ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘Before I go to sleep’. I read both these books and this one is similar so maybe if you liked the above this may appeal.
I was glad to come to the end. Lots of reviews commented on the last sentence of the book and yes that was a bit of a 'what' moment but too late Im afraid to make much difference when the will to live has already past!

Liked this very much

Would you listen to Until You're Mine again? Why?

No - I never listen to books again as a rule. I enjoyed the plot and the 'twist' at the end, so now I now how it all ended, I would have no desire to re-listen

What was one of the most memorable moments of Until You're Mine?

The final scenes, where the 'twist' was revealed (although there were a few clues building as the booked reached its end). The ending and explanation was somewhat improbable/ unlikely, but enjoyable nonetheless. I don't want to give the plot away, so I won't say any more but it was very enjoyable.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I can't pick out one scene more than any other. It was very well written and well performed. I liked the way the narration switched from one character to the other and the narrator did a good job of projecting the different personalities of the various characters.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Too tricky to put into a tag-line! But if I were to summarise, it is about what happens when the maternal urge drives a woman to take desperate measures...

Plot Twister

A riveting read and well audited too. Without giving away too much, this book really has you captivated. A word of warning though, quite gruesome in parts and it would be unkind and insensitive of me to recommend to someone who maybe sensitively affected or reeling from a recent miscarriage. Having said that though, full credit should still go to Samantha; for an engaging and thrilling fictitious novel from beginning to end. I hope you can enjoy. Thanks.

Disappointing

I must have listened to a different book from everyone else.

Characters - no depth, annoying and dreary.
Story - what was it with the sub-plot - filler?
Narration - I had to listen to this at a decent speed as the narrator was putting me to sleep, and she failed dismally with 'male' voices, they sound as if they have a perpetually blocked nose.
Overall - no, no and no... save a credit, listen to something decent.

The ending could of been so much more.

When I initially started listening I was so into this story, it was thrilling and had me at the edge of my seat but unfortunately I found that it drifted off towards the end and started focusing on other characters and story lines that were irrelevant to the core part that made it so interesting. It had the potential to be so much more at the end.

Entertaining but exhausting

Complex relationships combined with exciting characters keep the reader hooked til they get tipped on their head with a twist that takes a few re-reads to sort out.....thanks Samantha! The narration failed to separate some characters' voices sufficiently, although this may have been a requirement, and the last chapters end up a little anti-climatic as the writer justifies the twist. Still a good read that kept me engrossed.

very predictable

It took a while before I got used to the narrator-her voice was just too whispery. I found the story a bit disappointing, a very very obvious red herring was apparent by chapter 2 and the character development was sub par

Entertaining

I enjoyed the book and it's storyline did not guess the ending.
I have heard the male narrator several times need some variety there as I kept thinking of him in a previous book I had purchased.

Gripping until the end.

Where does Until You're Mine rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was a great listen on my morning commute to work. It kept me in the car a little longer to finish a chapter and see what happens.

What other book might you compare Until You're Mine to, and why?

No comparison yet

Have you listened to any of Clare Corbett’s other performances? How does this one compare?

She is a fantastic narrator. I went searching after this book to find others as i love her voice and how she makes the characters come alive.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would love the time to listen in one sitting - was very entrancing and you want to read in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

This book keeps you in suspense till the end. Great plot.

Love a good twist!

This was a great listen. It sucks you into the story from the first chapter and you are hooked till the end. Not predictable at all and you will enjoy it immensely. Highly recommend!
