Faced with an empty nest, stagnant jobs, and an economy in freefall, Kim Brown Seely and her husband decided to embark on a grand adventure. On an impulse, they purchased a sailboat, learned to sail, and set off toward untamed wilderness in search of the elusive blonde Kermode bear that only lives in a secluded forest in the Pacific Northwest.

Out on the open water, the couple faces physical challenges brought on by weather, geography, and inexperience. They also grapple with the mixed emotions of parents who, now untethered from their former life, must envision a new future for themselves. The author’s own lyrical voice shines through in this audio edition of her award-winning memoir, bringing us aboard the Heron to share in her voyage of discovery.

First published in hardcover by Sasquatch Books in 2019, Uncharted was a Nancy Pearl Book Award Finalist in 2020, and a Silver Nautilus Book Award Winner in 2019.

Honest first person account, without drama or pride, of a non-traditional real life adventure. One of those books that you do not mind reading, or hearing again in a few years.

Surprise…..This book is one of those rare finds for adventurers, or arm chair adventurers.

Kim Brown Seely does an amazing job narrating the story of her adventures both on a 54-foot sail boat in the wilds of Canada, and in life — navigating life’s changes and challenges. This book lends itself beautifully to audio, with the sounds of sea and sail underscoring section breaks. Totally enjoyed this!

Kim Brown Seely did a great job narrating her epic life sailing story. My objective in purchasing the book and audible is to learn all i can about blue water sailing based on the experience of others. As I listen, i bookmark things that i will look into further. I wasn't sure when i started this, but found myself relating to Kim's perspective with the exception that I am a father with 2 daughters, both now with their own children. My parents seemed to have a similar story to Kim and her husband where my father (WW2 navigator) decided he wanted to sail from the time older brother and I started HS. Both coincidentally were Purdue graduates, mother top of her class with English major and father an engineer. Mother mostly raised the 4 children while father climbed the corporate ladder. Father started with 17' "Bottoms Up" (mother very creative and artistic in all ways) which earned it's name from experience. Mother went along with father's dream to sail, but did not become the master of the sailing experience. Their roles were consistent at home and on he boat. I never thought of my father as "Skipper". He was different than most. He just did what needed to be done. That is why I did 4 out of 5 stars overall. I was appalled to learn how the husband lost his cool. I've crewed on other sail boats and have a recollection of joining a family who needed an extra crew in an overnight yacht race. I'll never forget the high strung skipper/captain lashing out at his son for not doing something up to the father's/skipper's standards. No excuse in my book. Not one person on that boat was a "professional" sailor. Maybe that father/husband knew how to sail (?), but he definitely did NOT know how to behave. He made the experience and race miserable for the crew as a result of his temper. I hope Kim's husband reflects on his attitude and behavior and learns to treat the better part of him with the love and respect she always deserves. His picture of sailing does not need to be her picture and if he wants more or different then he should figure out how to do it himself. Others do, so can he. This is not intended to be judgement, merely an observation based on my own personal sailing experience ... to date.

For me, very close to all 5's
