It’s April 1988, a month before Kinsey Millhone’s thirty-eighth birthday, and she’s alone in her office catching up on paperwork when a young man arrives unannounced. Michael Sutton is twenty-seven, an unemployed college dropout. More than two decades ago, a four-year-old girl disappeared, and a recent newspaper story about her kidnapping has triggered a flood of memories. Sutton now believes he stumbled on her lonely burial and could identify the killers if he saw them again. He wants Kinsey’s help in locating the grave and finding the men. It’s way more than a long shot, but he’s persistent and willing to pay cash up front. Reluctantly, Kinsey agrees to give him one day of her time.
But it isn’t long before she discovers Sutton has an uneasy relationship with the truth. In essence, he’s the boy who cried wolf. Is his story true, or simply one more in a long line of fabrications?

Moving effortlessly between the 1980s and the 1960s, and changing points of view as Kinsey pursues witnesses whose accounts often clash. Gradually, we come to see how everything connects in this twisting, complex, surprise-filled thriller. And as always, at the beating heart of her fiction is Kinsey Millhone, a sharp-tongued, observant loner who never forgets that under the thin veneer of civility is a roiling dark side to the soul.©2009 Sue Grafton; (P)2009 Random House

I agree with another reviewer that stated this was the best in this series. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was disappointed when it was over. Highly recommend to all.

LOVED IT!

Would you consider the audio edition of U Is for Undertow to be better than the print version?

I have listened to the entire series, so I now enjoy hearing the narrator in this series.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

In the first few books of the series I wasn't as impressed, but the plots have become more complex as the series has progressed. I couldn't figure out where the side stories were headed in the beginning, but they are masterfully tied together at the conclusion.

Which character – as performed by Judy Kaye – was your favorite?

Kinsey and Henry continue to be my favorite characters in the series.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The tangled web we weave.....

They just keep getting better!

I enjoy sue Grafton's books. But, try as I might, I cannot listen to Judy Kaye reading them. Mary Pfeiffer seems to read with the author -- enjoys the spirit of these books while Judy Kaye does not. Disappointing.

And disappointing, also, that Audible does not have more of this series available (in unabridged form).

Can't listen to this reader

The performance was great. The reader pulled out many different voices and was great at her job. The story was pretty good. The story did keep my attention but it did not surprise me at all. I think that is the way it was supposed to go but the story line did not keep me tuning in.

The performance was great. The story was good.

Glad to see some moral evolution in her characters. Clever unfolding of plot from multiple perspectives.

One of her better ones
