Publisher's Summary

In this first book in a new series, Thomas Pitt's son Daniel races to save his client from execution, setting him against London's Special Police Branch.

It's 1910, and Daniel Pitt is a reluctant lawyer who would prefer to follow in the footsteps of his detective father. When the biographer Russell Graves, who Daniel is helping defend, is sentenced to execution for the murder of his wife, Daniel's Pitt-family investigative instincts kick in, and he sets out to find the real killer.

With only 21 days before Graves is to be executed, Daniel learns that Graves is writing a biography of Victor Narraway, the former head of Special Branch and a close friend of the Pitts. And the stories don't shed a positive light. Is it possible someone is framing Graves to keep him from writing the biography-maybe even someone Daniel knows in Special Branch? The only answer, it seems, lies in the dead woman's corpse.

And so, with the help of some eccentric new acquaintances who don't mind bending the rules, Daniel delves into an underground world of dead bodies and double lives, unearthing scores of lies and conspiracies. As he struggles to balance his duty to the law with his duty to his family, the equal forces of justice and loyalty pull this lawyer-turned-detective in more directions than he imagined possible.

And amidst it all, his client's 21 days are ticking away.

Good First Daniel Pitt Novel!

Started a little slowly but gained momentum. Fell in love with the new characters and was delighted with the appearance of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. Hope to see more of them in future Daniel Pitt novels. Am going to love this spinoff series.

“New” character

Pleased to see the development of Daniel, since we, the readers, know his parents from previous Anne Perry books. It is like seeing a friend’s son grow up and making his way in the world, and trying to keep true to the values and lessons he has learned.

Narration Top-Notch

I enjoy Anne Perry books and this one was no exception. I was glad that the son is grown up now and am looking forward to read his storyline.

One of the best things was the narration!! The narrator's voice made it so easy to listen to and was sad to hear it end!

I cannot wait for book 2!

Imagine my delight when I discovered that this character in a new series was the son of a beloved set of characters from much earlier books by Anne Perry! The story was intriguing, the characters delightful, and the narration performance excellent! Hurry up and finish book 2 Ms. Perry!

Excellent!

I loved this book and look forward to more Daniel Pitt stories. Anne Perry is one of my favorite authors and I have been following the Pitt family since well before Daniel was born. The author does an outstanding job with both characters and plot. The story pulls you through from beginning to end.

Ridiculous plot

From beginning to end, the plot proceeds from one implausible point to the next, especially the legal and court proceedings. Too bad—the new character of Daniel Pitt has promise. Very good narrator.
