Publisher's Summary

Pete Buttigieg demonstrates how a breakdown of trust is central to our nation’s current predicament - and how our future depends on finding ways to instill confidence in the American project, and in each other.

Trust is the essential foundation of America’s democracy, asserts Pete Buttigieg, former presidential candidate and best-selling author of Shortest Way Home. In a century shaped by terrorism, financial collapse, Trumpist populism, global pandemic, and systemic racism, trust - in our government, corporations, experts, and, most tragically, in one another - has precipitously eroded and, for so many, never existed in the first place.

Recognizing that we are now experiencing disastrous consequences, the former South Bend mayor offers a direct reckoning with the corruption of social responsibility, interweaving history, political philosophy, and affecting passages of memoir, offering a new outlook for how we can confront the next decade’s challenges by building accountability. In this urgent work, Buttigieg confirms his status as a visionary political thinker.

Mayor Pete Shares How To Trust

No matter what he did during his presidential campaign and now supporting Joe Biden, Mayor Pete has shown us how to trust him and how to trust those who have our best interests at heart. This is a very interesting read.

Truth Equals Trust

I almost forgot how gratifying it is to listen to an intelligent speaker. The speech at the end brought back great memories of Pete's rallies that I was lucky enough to attend twice.

A Must-Read

Trust is a must-read for those who hope to improve—perhaps even to save—our democracy. Though this book is relatively short, it deals admirably with the rôle trust plays in interpersonal, ethnic/racial, economic, governmental, and international relationships. Without trust, people suffer. To improve the level of trust in society is to advance opportunity, security, and well-being. I highly recommend this book, narrated by the one who best knows and understands the material it contains—the author himself.

Obvious Analysis, But an Intellectual Foundation

I'll start by saying that I respect Pete as a political thinker. This being said, I find that this book comes across as not very original, at least to a progressive-minded person such as myself. The entire progressive project is to restore trust in American institutions, which for too long have squandered public goodwill or outright antagonized people in the BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and low income communities (and the intersections therein). So to me, the book read as rather obvious political analysis. However, Pete does have a way of speaking to older, more conservative audiences. This is of course due in part to the privileges of his education, his gender, and his ethnicity, but I do think it extends beyond that. He is a tactful and honest writer/speaker, and that can resonate (at least) with conservatives who haven't wholly abandoned intellectualism in the past decade. This is to say, I would recommend this book/audiobook as a gift to your conservative family members if you yourself are more progressive. It could do a lot to establish a foundation for productive discussion - something we are in dire need of in America right now. The performance itself was refreshing. I had listened to Pete's previous book as well on Audible, and he just has a calming yet confident voice. Also he can be a little bit of a nerd, which I find relatable. As a listening experience on morning walks, I'd say this was a good choice.

Grateful for this book!

Thanks for writing this book, Mayor Pete! It’s just what Americans need right now. We have to build trust among each other and among other countries. We need leaders to work together to make sure this happens, and it won’t be easy.
