Publisher's summary

The author of Population: 485 returns, delivering a truckload of humor, heart, and... gardening tips? Think Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, complete with stock cars, sexy vegetables, and a laugh track.

"All I wanted to do was fix my old pickup truck," says Michael Perry. "That, and plant my garden. Then I met this woman...." Truck: A Love Story recounts a year in which Perry struggles to grow his own food ("Seed catalogs are responsible for more unfulfilled fantasies than Enron and Penthouse combined"), live peaceably with his neighbors (one test-fires his black powder rifle in the alley; another's best Sunday shirt reads "100 PERCENT WHUP-ASS"), and sort out his love life. But along the way, he sets his hair on fire, is attacked by wild turkeys, takes a date to the fire department chicken dinner, and proposes marriage to a woman in New Orleans.

As with Population: 485, much of the spirit of Truck: A Love Story may be found in the characters Perry meets: a one-eyed land surveyor, a paraplegic biker who rigs a sidecar so that his quadriplegic pal can ride along, a bartender who refuses to sell light beer, an enchanting woman who never existed, and half the staff of National Public Radio.

By turns hilarious and heartfelt, a tale that begins on a pile of sheep manure, detours to the Whitney Museum of American Art, and returns to the deer-hunting swamps of northern Wisconsin, Truck: A Love Story becomes a testament to the surprising and unintended consequences of love.

Amazing book

Blown away by how good this book is. Cameos of my favorite metal bands outlaw country heroes and Greg Brown. Finding true love and getting the truck back on the road brought tears out a few times. Great job Michael

My first Michael Perry Book, but not my Last!

I was introduced to Michael Perry via Andy Andrews - anyone described by Andy as “one of the best writers I’ve ever read” was too intriguing to ignore. I’m sure glad I heard that podcast! Can’t wait to delve into the next book. Keep ‘em coming, Mr. Perry!

Loved it!

I love when an author narrates so the listener can get the true feel for the story being told. Perry is a deep thinker and reflective writer.

Fantastic

This book is one of my dads favorites. He has read it 4 times. He's one of those guys that only reads biography sand history books, so I was surprised when he told me about this one. I decided to give it a try and fell in love!!!

Great Story, Great Voice

Since I'm from WI, I know these characters well. Michael captures the essence of being from a small rural town and the blessings of being form WI.
He could read the dictionary and it would sound pleasant and relaxing.

Simply Wonderful

Wonderful telling or many facets of a larger story. This man is simply entertaining. And this Okie has been using “hinder” among other Midwesterner jargon upon starting Mr. Perry’s other books.

Home, family and everyday lfie.

Listened to Michael Perry on NPR, enjoyed his narrative for his new book. Looked up books available on Audible. Truck was the first I listened too, made me feel like was included in the story.

Humanity, humility, honesty, and humor!

This book spoke to me, maybe because I've always wanted my own old truck, and I just loved the stripped down emotional clarity that Michael Perry expresses. His humanity, humility, honesty, and humor is so evident in his writing, and he is adept at going from descriptions of fixing up his International Harvester pickup and subtly meandering into more philosophical areas of life. Thank you, Michael Perry, and thank you, Vicki, for recommending this excellent book!

Loved it

The love story is not about the truck, but it is, and more. Michael’s gift of translating the taken for granted ordinary into a colorful weave of relatable story was beautiful.. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Perry’s drawl. Loved it.
