Publisher's summary

A passionate one-night-stand years ago leads to an unlikely friendship....

Jackson James follows lots of rules. He has to. He’s a sheriff’s deputy. But strict adherence to the law during daylight has been enjoyably balanced by his own rakish regulations at night. Jackson, usually happy to protect and to serve (and serve, and serve), starts questioning his rules when wayward evenings begin to feel more like being waylaid rather than getting laid. The once laissez faire sheriff deputy can’t help but long for something real.

Movie star Raquel Ezra follows only one rule: Always leave them wanting more. Strict adherence to this single rule has served her well. Studio execs, reporters, audiences, fans, lovers - no one can get enough of the bombshell. But when “generous offers” start to feel like excessive demands, years of always leaving has the habitually elusive movie star longing for something lasting.

Seeking an escape, Raquel abruptly returns to the small hamlet of Green Valley, Tennessee, and her path crosses with the delectable deputy she spent one unforgettable night with years ago. However, when scandal and intrigue soon follow, Raquel and Jackson must decide which is more important: maintaining their rules? Or, at long last, finding something real?

Disappointing

This book was kind of boring compared to the Winston Bros series. Very anti-climatic and lacking in humor especially. A lot of inner dialog for both main characters and just blah, wish I didn’t waste a credit.

awww love

I have listened to a lot of Penny Reid and a lot of audio books. Because of my job I sometimes listen to two or three or four books a week. I can hands down say that this book had all the feels with a giant smiley emoji and several goofy hearts. Shucks - loved it! made me want to simultaneously re-listen to all her books while swooning over this one and checking when the next one comes out. Aaaaaah. the whole Winston Brothers et all, such a well written, smart, and loving series. plus this book! My favorite. Loved it!

2 hours left & I just don’t care any longer.

Schmalzy romance that goes on 5 hours too long. Some fairly far-fetched ideas & places where you want to say, “REALLY? You really let people who work for you treat you like such crap? Your agent & etc. ad nauseam walk all over you for years? But you’re strong & independent? The two don’t match.” The male narrator has a deep, bass voice. That can be sexy, but he is very hard to understand quite a bit, because at times he speaks so low while almost whispering that I wished for subtitles. 🙄

I hate not finishing a book, but I really have no desire to see how it ends. (Not like the ending not obvious from the start…🤷🏼‍♀️) Save your money or credits!

Sigh...

One of my favorite series.
Chris has the sexiest voice... ay caramba!!! mis ovarios gritan cuando él narra (My ovaries scream when he talks!...)
No, I'm not a perv but the man has one of the sexiest voices I ever heard mmm... sigh...
Anywho... (fanning myself like an old lady from the 60's...)
Love this spin off series!

Normally like her books

The characters are so juvenile and underdeveloped. Did not expect characters in this age bracket to not have experienced some of those milestones.

Loved it even more the second time

Updated: Good chemistry, steamy romance. I listened to this before any other Winston books so having now read the rest, I loved this so much more! Ray and Jackson are adorable and perfect together. Seeing Cletus and Jethro come through for Jackson was also wonderful, given the history. The narration was also (as always for these books) brilliant!

Some good quotes:

“I shan’t tell a soul. Except for my Jen, cause she shares my soul.”

This was the first time someone had touched me and it felt important. The way he looked at me, the way his eyes traced my nose to my lips, how he smiled when I smiled and frowned when I frowned. It all felt - important. Like I should be taking notes for a later test. Or filming it all for later review. I needed to keep it, hold it close, far from everyone else. I needed to keep it safe and protected. But I also wanted to take an ad out in Variety and scream about it from the tallest building: I love this man. He is important to me.

“What, what is it?”

“I’m happy!” She said, the words bursting out of her. “I’m so happy.”

“And you’re afraid it won’t last?” I stepped closer, trying to understand.

“No,” another tear followed the path of the first even though she wore a wide smile. “That’s just it: I know it’ll last. I know Sienna and I are going to be successful. I know I’ll love living here. I know we - you and me - are going to last. And it feels overwhelming to know I’m at the very beginning of all this happiness.”

I thought about her words until I felt the truth of them. And then, I, too, felt overwhelmed. We’re going to last. She was right. We were. This wasn’t temporary. We were going to last.

Soft porn with predictable plot

Had I known the extent of gratuitous sex that did nothing to advance the plot I wouldn’t have bothered buying this book. Thankfully there’s a fast forward button. I employed it extensively and sometimes for lengthy stretches at a time. The plot was predictable and basic. Nothing thought provoking or memorable here. Disappointed. I only finished it to count it on my goodreads annual challenge.

Opposite worlds collide

The hot consuming attraction between a deputy sheriff and a movie star. ❤❤❤
Jackson James and Ray find their worlds turned upside down in this story based in Green Valley the home of the Winston family. My favourite Winston brother Cletus is included in this storyline and as usual Chris Brinkley does an amazing job of narration throughout. Wish I could give more than 5 stars 🌟

A lovely return visit to Green Valley

Loved hearing Jackson & Rae's story. Although the Winston Brothers series has ended, it's great that this series is also set in Green Valley and with supporting characters from the Winston Brothers series given centre stage. Most of the Winston's, and their spouses also feature, so I loved this book for that reason too.
I have already downloaded Book 2, and I'm looking forward to the series continuing beyond that book.
Fab narration as always too!

Folking delightful

Hard not to fall for Jackson James - he's hot, smart, careful, kind AND loves his mum and dad! Rae is dealing with mummy issues, with trust and commitment issues but is also, in fact kind and thoughtful. I really liked both of these characters and so glad they hot over themselves and spoke their truths!

🎧 Jackson and Raquel 🎧

A pleasant but fairly uneventful visit to Green Valley. I love a redemption story and waited patiently for Jackson's, but it was a little underwhelming overall, and there were a quite a few mispronounciations from both narrtors.
