Named a best romance of the year by Entertainment Weekly
Named a most anticipated romance by Oprah Daily, Marie Claire, BuzzFeed, PopSugar, and more!

“There was no romance novel more fun this year than this extremely witty enemies-with-benefits confection.” —Entertainment Weekly

The author of the “hilarious...joyful, elegant” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) To Have and to Hoax returns with an effervescent, charming, and swoon-worthy novel about a man and woman who never agree on anything—until they agree to a no-strings-attached affair in this Regency-era romp.

The widowed Diana, Lady Templeton and Jeremy, Marquess of Willingham are infamous among English high society as much for their sharp-tongued bickering as their flirtation. One evening, an argument at a ball turns into a serious wager: Jeremy will marry within the year or Diana will forfeit one hundred pounds. So shortly after, just before a fortnight-long house party at Elderwild, Jeremy’s country estate, Diana is shocked when Jeremy appears at her home with a very different kind of proposition.

After his latest mistress unfavorably criticized his skills in the bedroom, Jeremy is looking for reassurance, so he has gone to the only woman he trusts to be totally truthful. He suggests that they embark on a brief affair while at the house party—Jeremy can receive an honest critique of his bedroom skills and widowed Diana can use the gossip to signal to other gentlemen that she is interested in taking a lover.

Diana thinks taking him up on his counter-proposal can only help her win her wager. With her in the bedroom and Jeremy’s marriage-minded grandmother, the formidable Dowager Marchioness of Willingham, helping to find suitable matches among the eligible ladies at Elderwild, Diana is confident her victory is assured. But while they’re focused on winning wagers, they stand to lose their own hearts.

With Martha Waters’s signature “cheeky charm and wonderfully wry wit” (Booklist, starred review), To Love and to Loathe is another clever and delightful historical rom-com that is perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Evie Dunmore.

Loved the story and how it built up during the first book. Would have liked the story to be a little longer

Left wanting more!

An hour and 55 minutes left to go in the book and it never finished downloading, so I never got to hear he ending…. Pretty frustrating.

Much more enjoyable than book one - better storyline!

I read books 1, 2 and 5 back-to-back - book 2 was much more enjoyable than book 1. It was a very different read than most regency romances with the main female character being a widow and the main male character being a long-time friend proposing a relationship of an unusual nature - since she never planned to marry again and he never intends to marry at all…

It was fun listening to the pair make a bet that he can avoid his father’s insistence and the two of them in the meantime practice their affair and her teaching him to be a better paramour. Quite a fun one that was different than most out there.

Narrators did a better job than they did in book 1 (same pair).

I’ve read and listened to a few other regency eta novels in the last year and this one has been the most boring so far. The author relied too often on the same descriptors (we get it - Diana has a well endowed bosom and everyone smirks “like the cat that got the cream.”)

There were characters introduced who were not really fleshed out or given much depth; others were entirely forgotten after their initial description. And the plot? Well, Jane Austen did it say better.

The female narrator did an admirable job with the content she was given, but the male narrator was horrible. He was very affected. I don’t know if that was his actual voice or if he was trying to give an air of distinction to the male lead, who was a marquis, Either way, it came of as pretentious and quickly grew annoying and distracting from the story.

If you want a regency era book to listen to, I suggest one written by Evie Dunmore. Save this for a paperback you get a Half Priced Books.

I wish I read the reviews before I used a credit on this book

Gave the second book a try after fighting my way through first of this series. I thought the writing was good but the overly dramatic male narrator and vitriolic premise of the novel nearly killed my conflict averse heart. Thankfully the level of conflict in this novel suited me better and the characters were significantly more intelligent and likeable. I'm glad I continued with it despite the rough start.

Much better than the 1st book & the male narrator had a better performance this time.
