Story
The wall just didn’t look right. Alex has been trying to cope. Life after his deployment had been rough. His ex-wife thought he needed to stop disappointing their daughter. She was right. He would try harder. With six hours before his little girl’s fourth birthday party, he saw the anomaly. One wall was too short. Plenty of time to tear out a panel and look behind it. He found a brick wall. His house wasn’t made of brick. Behind that was another just like the first. He still had time. When the second wall came down, Alex stood and stared at the shining doorway.

Publisher's Summary
September 11, 2001. Padma Mahajan mourns the loss of her newlywed husband, Major Kyle Mason, killed while defeating terrorists from crashing American 11 into the World Trade Center. As she watches harrowing videos on TV of American 11 missing the North Tower by mere feet, a mysterious visitor enters her apartment, possessing stunning knowledge about the future. Leveraging this information, Padma becomes the world’s wealthiest person and de facto "Empress of America" until a new authoritarian challenges her rule and forces her and the visitor from the future to escape into the past - through the Time Tunnel.
An accident in the Time Tunnel throws the couple hopelessly off course. Lost in time, they use their knowledge of the future to change the outcome of one of history’s most heinous massacres. As they attempt to change the past, they are hunted by Colonel Annika Wise, who has orders to kill the time traveling duo.
Time Tunnel: The Empire is the thrilling sequel to Time Tunnel: The Twin Towers, a daring suspense story in which history is changed for better...and worse.
Critic Reviews
"Time Tunnel: The Empire was a crazy good adventure that I would have never expected from this sci-fi style book. It is a must-read that I could hardly put down." (Manhattan Book Review)
"[E]erie similarities to our current political climate cannot be denied.... This book also ends on a great cliffhanger, leaving the reader wanting much more." (San Francisco Book Review)
"In this second installment of a series, Todd (Time Tunnel: The Twin Towers, 2019) continues exploring the intriguing possibilities of time travel, backing up his speculations with well-researched history and believable science. Though adept at setting up exciting, tense confrontations, the author is also a thoughtful writer, and his characters are appropriately vulnerable, though Padma is hailed as the messiah of Lakota prophecy and Kyle has modern weaponry. Todd’s Lakota camp and the town of Deadwood come vividly alive with well-chosen, telling details such as the checkerboard that sits atop a general store’s cracker barrel. The cliffhanger ending will leave readers eager for the next volume." (Kirkus)
"Just like the first novel in the series The Twin Towers, The Empire is full of action, intrigue, and suspense. Richard Todd does a fantastic job of retelling historical events, which are brilliantly researched." (Seattle Book Review)
"Relationships are tested in this story; the only way to know how you truly feel about someone is to throw them in a situation together for which they are totally unprepared. The reader is able to delve deeper into the feelings of the characters and grasp a better understanding for the motivation of their actions. As in Twin Towers, there is action galore, and The Empire includes another story from history that originally ended badly, but now occurs in a way we would have liked for it to have played out. The ending was a complete shock, with another phase in the Time Tunnel series coming at a later date." (Tulsa Book Review)

WARNING: 2nd book is preachy and regressive.
If you want to be preached at by a self-righteous regressive author, this may be the book for you.
If you want an enjoyable, entertaining, non-political book this book is NOT for you.
I won’t waste my time on books with characters I dislike. And the hero and heroine became VERY dislikable VERY QUICKLY in the second book! Therefore, I only managed to get through a few chapters before I got fed-up with the VERY OBVIOUS far left regressive slant to this book.
I listen to a new audible book book every other day, and probably gotten a couple hundred audible books. I have only returned one other book before this one. It’s that BAD!

Loved the first book, but this.... ?
I found the second book in this series extremely frustrating. I like that Richard Todd tried to subvert our expectations to make it interesting, but in the process, he warped the characters I grew to like beyond all recognition. All of the major players did things that went way, way, way against their established characters with no regard to the effect that their MAJOR actions would have on history.
Characters I found sympathetic in the first book annoyed me so much that I was glad when the book ended.

Loved the first book - this one is off the rails
The first book in this series was nothing short of fantastic - another great in the "Time Travel" genre. 2 main issues - this follow-up book goes way off the rails into a storyline that's so unbelievable and random I'm surprised it was even written by the same author. Can't give away the plot details but the 2 main characters risk the entire fate of humanity so they can be together - and their "true love" was only a 48 hour marriage? I'm a sucker for a good love story but this is ridiculous.
My second issue is the gross over-generalization of what the author defines as far right extremism and religious people in general - while this is a work of fiction, his characterization of the political right and religion in general is so extreme it takes away from the plot. Ironically - the ability for these despots to take over the US is less believable than time travel itself.
Sadly - this is a sad sequel to a fantastic Book 1 - which was one of my top 5 time travel fiction books of all time.

Great follow up to the first book!!
Sometimes you never know what you’re going to get in a sequel. I loved the first book and I’m happy to report that I absolutely loved loved loved the second one! This book was so creative and also went in a very different direction but so amazingly fun to read and very exciting and fast-paced. It was very satisfying and you’ll have to read it to know exactly what I’m talking about... but THIS alternate history was extremely satisfying. Lots of character development and evolution of these characters too and plenty of surprises. I very much enjoyed it.

Anti-White racism is still racism!
The time travel parts of this book are great. Richard Todd is obviously woke. Politics is a cesspool. If I wanted a book on politics and his political opinions I would have bought that instead. I'm mad that I gave him my money. I call the philosophy in this book racist, Mr Todd.

Completely astonished
The first book in this series is amazing. One of the better time travel books i've read. This book...manages to go the exact opposite direction. I can't even believe its from the same author. I don't know what happened between books 1 and 2, but its actually quite amazing. As others have said, the time travel aspect is the most believable part of this book. The actual story is not sci-fi, its just lunacy. If it took place on Mars it would be more believable.
The basic plot as i saw it was if a dark skinned woman were in power all americans would become aggressively racist and a republican senator could exploit that racism to take over the country. And essentially all branches of the american armed forces would just go along with it and aide this senator and accept it even though the senator is doing even crazier things like putting his children in charge of said military branches. Its like a child is writing the story. I can't explain enough how incredibly disappointing this book is given the strong first effort.

What a pain in the neck!!! This is the worst, most aggravating ending to any book I’ve ever read! I wish someone would have saved me from listening to this book before I ever listened to one word of it!!! The story is weird and has a really good, extra long, story, building up to a much anticipated ending….. then the stupid ending makes you sorry you read/ listened to this book!!! Complete Derailment
The first book was good, this one completely came off the tracks. This one becomes very political and will offend the Left and the Right. The two main characters (Padma & Kyle Mason) become extreme power hungry and have bought off almost every politician and control elections to force their agenda. Any that oppose Padma & Klye are painted as right wing fascist.
I did not finish the book and will not get the third book in the series.
