Bloomsbury presents Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas, read by Elizabeth Evans.

Lethal. Loyal. Legendary.

Enter the world of Throne of Glass with the first book in the #1 bestselling series by Sarah J. Maas.

In a land without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She has no love for the vicious king who rules from his throne of glass, but she has not come to kill him. She has come to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three murderers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the King’s Champion.

Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. And a princess from a faraway country will befriend her. But something rotten dwells in the castle, and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying mysteriously, one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival—and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

From some of the more critical reviews, I was expecting something more uncomfortably “YA”, yet I ended up being pleasantly surprised. I can understand the frustrations of the MC being a stone cold prodigy one moment, and then, you know...just acting her age the next, but it’s not a contradiction; it feels actually quite realistic, if you’ve ever known someone so incredibly talented but is still clearly growing into themselves. Add the trauma of the work camp in addition to simply being away from her craft for a year... of course she’s not formidable and invincible the moment we meet her. Her inconsistency makes even more sense the more her backstory unfolds in the subsequent books. I would recommend keeping an open mind and then simply enjoying the ride.

Young adult, sure

So I was suggested this book to cure my Fourth Wing/Iron Flame hangover... it did not. I thought the characters were not well-written. I felt our Heroine was bland and a bit bratty. The King's son... I have NO idea what is appealing about this turd. And the Captain - sounds hot but again, wet rag. I'm moving on to the author's ACOTAR series in hopes of fighting my hangover that still exists.

****UPDATE!!! I'm an idiot. I read the rest of this series. ALL SEVEN BOOKS! I LOVED IT! Throne of Glass WAS boring to me - but once I got sucked in, I ended up looooving it.

UPDATE!!! First review I said "Not for me". WRONG!

I started this after ACOTAR and found it to be good, but not quite as good. I will definitely read the series though!

Not as good as ACOTAR, but still good!

this book is amazing. I got into it bc of a friend telling me about it. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. the voice playing, and the pictures painted so vividly, I didn't want it to end; although, I have heard the 2nd book is better! off I go to figure it out!! 😍😍

fantastic imagery

I enjoyed this book and the narrator. I bumped it to 1.2xspeed as I felt the hurried pace made the book more suspenseful.
The characters are developed well and enough of them are kept secret to keep you wanting more.

Great listen

Full disclosure, this is not a genre that I tend to read. I’m much more of a science-fiction gal. A friend swore by the series, really, really liked it, so I thought I would try. I thought, “She’s an assassin. She’s being sprung from a salt mine. This will work.” But the book really emphasizes her outfits and her hair and the men she finds interesting and attractive. Just wasn’t for me.

Too much romance, not enough fae

I’m trying to love this book but I can’t get past the awful character differentiation- this reader does a terrible job with the characters and she isn’t consistent 🥲 making it hard to follow

Replace the reader!

I’m so happy I finally took the jump and started reading this series!!! I loved every minute of it. I kind of figured out where the story was going early on, however, I wasn’t completely right so when I did get my answer I was still surprised.

Why wait???

The story and mystery were good. This is a good book for young adult audience. Less so for an older audience seeking a little romance. The mystery was intriguing but the characters do not seem fully developed. They may be in later books but this is my impression as a first read. The make voices are grunge worthy but you can get past it. Loved Court of Roses series so will stay loyal and make it through the rest.

Good but not as good as Court of Roses

I didn’t love this book. I know the series is beloved so I’m in it to the end but this wasn’t her best. I also can not stand how this was narrated. Awful.

The Narration is Cringe
