Publisher's summary

The “blockbuster” (The Guardian) New York Times bestseller, a shocking, definitive account of the 2020 election and the first year of the Biden presidency by two New York Times reporters, exposes the deep fissures within both parties as the country approaches a political breaking point.

This is the authoritative, “deeply reported” (The Wall Street Journal) account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House.

From Donald Trump’s assault on the 2020 election and his ongoing campaign of vengeance against his fellow Republicans to the behind-the-scenes story of Biden’s selection of Kamala Harris as his running mate and his bitter struggles to unite the Democratic Party, this book exposes the degree to which the two-party system has been strained to the point of disintegration. More than at any time in recent history, the long-established traditions and institutions of American politics are under siege as a set of aging political leaders struggle to hold together the changing country.

Martin and Burns break news on most every page, drawing on hundreds of interviews and never-before-seen documents and recordings from the highest levels of government. This “masterful” (George Stephanopoulos) book asks the vitally important (and disturbing) question: can American democracy, as we know it, ever work again?

Ammerca's Futura does Not included Trump

The damage done to American democracy by Trump and his corrupt phsycophants will not be undone anytime soon. It will take years and a renewed belief in liberal democracy, or by suffering years of authoritarian rule to appreciate what was America. I fear for my country, mostly I fear for my grandchildren. They may never know the America I knew before Trump.

One of the Two is a Bigger Fool

This is a story of the 2020 election and its candidates. It is a criticism of each of the four ticket holders, Biden, Trump, Harris, and Pence. The book does not concentrate on their virtues but does deeply portray and provide analysis of their mediocrity. The difference comes down to Trump does not care at all for his minions, (supporters) or the American way. Biden does care for the citizens and the American way. This Will Not Pass, Trump, Biden and the Battle for American Democracy, written by Jonathan Martin, and Alexander Burns, and narrated by Dennis Boutsikaris. Its style is to tell the history of the candidates' acts, back and forth comparing how they are confronted by issues in their quest for the presidency and how they handle the problems. This book is no gift to Biden. With that said, weighing the competency of the two men, according to the book, Biden has cunning and some capacity for Congressional politics and international management and he cares. Trump has no aptitude, is not strategic, and does not have concern for his country or its people. I guess I should add, that according to the story Bifen has much in the way of mediocre smarts. Trump, is depicted of having little smarts and much evil intent.

These are two brilliant journalists telling a story so very well. If you are intrigued by American politics this is an enlightening read, of a well-written, easy-to-read documentary.

Ultra biased history

This book is a poor attempt to discuss the history of the last 2 years. Although the writers attempt to discuss Biden and his administration, they only succeed in disparaging the former president and all of his supporters. This is a perfect example of the double standard to the press tries to claim does not exist. Sorry I wasted a credit on this book at hate.

What was undone can't easily be redone

While there are still 'news' outlets ginning up the misinformation and lies about the 2020 election and members of congress that supported the insurrection are allowed to keep their seats, America is on a downward slide. And like a 747 without its engines, it isn't a glide to ground; we may not survive the decline...

Oh come on

The reader has no clue how to pronounce notable people's names: Daniel Inouye, Steve Scalise, even Kamala Harris and there are more than just those. It's extraordinarily distracting. The book is good if you can get past that.

Sad state of Affairs

The book was well written and explained step by step what occur before during and after the Trump administration. It was sad to sit and listen to how this country was illegally taken home and people called it a lie. Trump was a disgrace to this country from the first time he acknowledged running for office. What he has done to America was the same as what mount Vesuvius did to Italy. We will never be the same. I hope when people read this book they read it with an open mind. The book is truthful with very clear facts. To believe anything else just shows ignorance on the part of the reader or a listener.
