Spencer Quinn follows the critical success of his "New York Times best-selling Dog on It with this second mystery starring hapless private investigator Bernie and his four-legged partner Chet, a K-9 school dropout.
While Bernie continues his struggle to pay the bills, Chet - with his sharp nose and even sharper teeth - keeps bringing down the perps. Told from Chet's perspective and featuring the humorous ramblings of a dog, Thereby Hangs a Tail is another winner.

Chet tells a great tale--pun intended

Spencer Quinn does a marvelous job of capturing the dog’s-eye view. The stories sound just like Chet is really telling them – complete with his unique view of what is really important, and occasional lapses of focus. But Chet also can occasionally pick up on what is truly important. And if he was working with anybody but Bernie, this might go unnoticed.
Jim Frangione does a wonderful job with the narration. He sounds just like you would expect Chet to sound if a dog could talk.
In this story, Chet and Bernie get tangled up with a tiny show dog and her rich owner. At first glance, it doesn’t look like their kind of case at all, and if they weren’t struggling to make the rent and so on, they probably would never have taken the case at all. At first, I thought Chet might do something to get them dropped from the case, and then that he and the show dog – Princess – wouldn’t get along at all. But when Chet and Princess find themselves having to cross the desert on their own and Chet notices a very determined look in Princess’s eyes which he comes to respect, they seem to strike up a friendship.
The humans in the book mostly fare less well. Particularly Princess’ owner, who dies. For a long stretch, Chet and Princess, who are the ones to discover her body, are the only ones who know she is dead. Besides the “perp”, of course. But the “perp” makes his big mistake when he messes with Suzie, Bernie’s reporter friend.
Sounds just like it was written by the dog
