Publisher's summary

Midlife is full of surprises. Not all of them are working for me.

At 42, I’ve had my share of ups and downs. Relatively normal, except when the definition of normal changes...drastically.

New York Times best-selling romance author: Check
Amazing besties: Check
Lovely home: Check
Pet cat named Thick Stella who wants to kill me: Check
Wacky-tabacky-dealing aunt: Check
Cheating husband banging the weather girl on our kitchen table: Check
Nasty divorce: Oh, yes
Characters from my novels coming to life: Umm...yes
Crazy: Possibly

Four months of wallowing in embarrassed depression should be enough. I’m beginning to realize that no one is who they seem to be, and my life story might be spinning out of my control. It’s time to take a shower, put on a bra, and wear something other than sweatpants. Difficult, but doable.

With my friends - real and imaginary - by my side, I need to edit my life before the elusive darkness comes for all of us.

The plot is no longer fiction. It’s my reality, and I’m writing a happy-ever-after no matter what. I just have to find the write hook.

The first half of a book😡

This was my first time listening to something by Ms. Peterman and the first time exploring Women’s Paranormal Romance Fiction. Not my usual genre, but I did enjoy the experience and laughed out loud a couple of times. I’ll listen to the second half of the book then move on to some other author. I enjoyed the kooky characters but a little bit goes a long way so it got a little tedious after a while. I had fun counting the wise sayings (cliches) from different cultures of the US, brought out and shined up and mostly used in the right context. But again, an ounce of chocolate hits you where you need it, a pound just hits you.
Be warned this is the first half of a book not the first book of a series. I think I’ll send a little voovoo juju towards the yeeha that made that decision. If I didn’t have Kindle Unlimited I would have been madder than a wet ……….

can't finish

I usually enjoy Robyn Peterman's books but I just can't get past the narrator.

Narrator Issues

Let me know if this book is ever reissued with a different narrator and I'll gladly try it again.

Decent story but a little annoying

The vernacular was annoying and redundant. The story itself is a great concept, but seemed a little under developed. The way the characters spoke and the vernacular just annoyed me. The performance seemed New England and didn’t match the supposed southern setting. Overall, it was an ok listen being part of my audible subscription, but not something I’d pay for.
It could have been much better

Definitely highly recommend

Absolutely hilarious start of the series. The characters are so relatable and funny don’t read in public as you will laugh out loud at the many unexpected twist and turns. Have already ordered book two and now not patiently waiting for it.

Not for me

So apparently there is a genre called Paranormal Women's Fiction, and apparently it's not for me! I might have preferred this book if I'd read it, as the narrator used a campy private-investigator-from-the-20's/gumshoe Joe style intonation that grated on my nerves throughout the story. Why couldn't the main character just sound like a normal person?!? Beyond that, if terms such as "Black-and-Decker-Pecker-Wrecker" and "Weather-Hooker" and trite, predictable banter make you giggle, then you might enjoy this; if they make you gag in your mouth every time you hear them, then please spare yourself the esophageal wear and tear. Also, as other reviewers have noted, it ends without an end (cliffhanger). I'll wait for the sequel synopsis and spare myself the listen to find out what happens.

Loved it! Premise, writing voice, and narrator voice

Loved this! Reminds me of EJ Copperman, with a great real-person-in-a-strange-situation voice, so there’s humor embedded in the drama. Will definitely look for more by this author, too
