Don't waste your pain. None of us escapes the heartache and disappointments of life. To live is to hurt, and we all have the wounds to prove it. Regardless of how we've been hurt, we all face a common question: What should we do with our pain? Should we stoically ignore it? Should we just "get over it"? Should we optimistically hope that everything will work out in the end? If we fail to respond appropriately to the wounds that life and relationships inflict, our pain will be wasted; it will numb us or destroy us.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

We're all infected with a spiritual disease. Its name is shame. Whether we realize it or not, shame affects every aspect of our personal lives and vocational endeavors. It seeks to destroy our identity in Christ, replacing it with a damaged version of ourselves that results in unhealed pain and brokenness. But God is telling a different story for your life. Psychiatrist Curt Thompson unpacks the soul of shame, revealing its ubiquitous nature and neurobiological roots. He also provides the theological and practical tools necessary to dismantle shame.

Trying softer is sacred work. And while it won't be perfect or easy, it will be worth it. Because this is what we were made for: a living, breathing, moving, feeling, connected, beautifully incarnational life.

Dan Allender's lyrical book about the Sabbath expels the myriad myths about this "day of rest," starting with the one that paints the Sabbath as a day of forced quiet, spiritual exercises, and religious devotion and attendance. This, he says, is at odds with the ancient tradition of Sabbath as a day of delight for both body and soul. Instead, the only way we can make use of the Sabbath is to see God's original intent for the day with new eyes. In Sabbath, Allender builds a case for delight by looking at this day as a festival that celebrates God's re-creative, redemptive love.

He shows you how to confront and process the story of your family of origin, your sexual story, the story your body is telling you, your cultural story, your story with God, and more with kindness rather than judgment so that you can experience healing, self-acceptance, and release.

Historia
Every relationship has its highs and lows, but we often don't know what to do with our "lows," or how we ended up there. What is creating friction, exacerbating our pain, and standing in the way of intimacy? More often than not, it is the stories of our past drifting into the present. But if we are willing to look at them closely, we will be able to write a new story for the future. With more than seventy years of therapeutic experience combined, Dan Allender and Steve Call demonstrate how God is inviting you and your partner to a wild faith journey with the hope of transformation.

Very helpful
I found this book to be very helpful in my healing journey. It is very intelligent in it's design and offers hard truths that are important to the process. The best book I've read so far concerning sexual abuse.

An absolute masterpiece
I’m not certain how to put into words how profound this work is. It’s not easy, it’s not a quick fix, and it’s not “new.” It simply communicates in terms that (albeit hard to hear, and against our fallen nature) resound with our new nature in Christ that the principles are God’s, and the work going on here is that of the Holy Spirit. To the unsaved that may pick this up…I feel it will be of little help. I weep for whatever pain you may have faced in the past, and long for you to come to know Christ as your saviour. He will be your only means for healing from any abuse that may have taken place, or the certain experience of other pain that you have experienced as a result of the fall of man.

great for survivors
this book was recommended by my therapist . I'm a sexual abuse survivor and this book explained things I never knew how to put into words on my own. I will probably read through it again because it is remarkable. Although some sections are hard to read because they made me cry from validation. thank you I'll be looking for more of your books .

Honest, Complex, True
After reading many, many Christian resources on healing from any type of trauma and not finding a single one that dealt with its complexities, I have found finally found a gem in this masterpiece and clear labor of love. Dr. Allender clearly addresses the nuances and complexities of the wounded heart. He has reached directly into the depths of my sorrow and sinfully defensive styles of relating that have driven me to near madness and despair--driven deeper by many attempts of others to draw me towards resurrection before my own crucifixion was understood and complete. Dr. Allender tenderly and compassionately drew me to the foot of the cross. By God's grace, I can engage my wounded heart with the same tenderness and compassion and redeem the grave losses of my life. Thank you is not enough. When we see each other in glory, you will know the depths of my love and gratitude for you and your commitment to Christ. Amen.

hard to hear, but powerful
The information in this book is challenging and will elicit strong emotions and memories. But the relief from guilt and self contempt is so real, it will at times seem unbelievable. Satan does not want you to read this book. He wants you to remain broken. You owe it to yourself to read this book, and receive the healing that God has made available to you through it.

content's great, narrator's voice too "triggering"
loved the content. definitely brought up tons to the surface regarding issues I need to deal with and heal. but the narrator's voice was triggering by the time I started remembering things. very subtle but sounded lowkey angry (like level one abusers voice and the escalation was crazy explosive, so please no).
it's not the narrator's fault, the voice was caring and calming also. simply wish that audible had the option to change the voice like you could do with other forms of auditory learning materials.
