Story
When Lydia was a teenager, she made a decision that ruined her family's life. They've spent the last 30 years living with the consequences and doing their best to pretend it never happened. Lydia's husband, the gorgeous and reliable Mark, and her two teenage children know nothing about that summer back in 1982. And that's the way Lydia wants it to stay. The opportunity to come clean is long gone, and now it's not the lie that matters; it's the betrayal of hiding the truth for so long.

Story
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Publisher's summary
What if the perfect life you envy was rotten to the core?
Three brand-new friends. Three very different families. Way too many secrets.
Gisela, Sally and Kate become close when they move into the same new housing estate. But behind their shiny front doors, each has something to hide.
Gisela’s Facebook profile is plastered with photos of her high-achieving son - #soproud; her teenage daughter - #bestfriends; and her gorgeous husband - #lovemyhubs. She’s the envy of everyone she knows, but how long can she keep covering up the truth?
Sally is married to her soul mate - or so the champagne glasses glinting in front of another tropical sunset seem to suggest. But what will it take for her friends to realise the life she claims to adore is breaking her heart?
Kate is a single mum. She uses Facebook to keep an eye on her teenage daughter but claims her own life is too boring to post anything herself. But maybe Kate wants to sit below the radar because she doesn’t want anyone to look too closely and start asking questions about her past....
Three lives collide in this gripping story about friendship, motherhood and marriage and the façade of perfection people present to the world.

another great book
I love her books. They always have ineresting dynamics of how women I react with one another. somehow we all feel that others' lives are so much better and reality is, we all have good days, bad days, difficult times, and our own struggles. I hope this book helps women feel better about their own lives.

Great book! I found it to be a great reminder that no one is perfect and that we should be wary when using social media as a means of comparison. It’s really just an online photo book of all the perfect moments in an imperfect life.

Nice story.
The characters are believable and seem to just be letting us peek into their everyday lives. A few parts move a little slow, but in life we don't always get know everything right away either. This book covers a lot of topics and challenges you to think about what you might do in a similar situation. Ending the book is like saying goodbye to friends. Good narrator.

The things women share as parents, friends, lovers, wives and individuals.
I would recommend this book to women, especially, who have some life experiences that they've shared because most experiences - good or bad - can only be processed when filtered through the love of a friend?

Narration ALMOST ruined it, but stay with it !!
I loved this story... very current , relevant, and relatable , but I don't understand why the narrator made each of the main characters sound exactly the same ! Although she would have been a good choice and voice for one of the characters, this book either needed multiple narrators or one who could help differentiate between who was speaking (other than saying their name first).
In spite of this, I really really enjoyed the book, and would definitely recommend it.

Beautiful - Kerry, thank you so much
I loved this book. Thank you.
I read somewhere that you should listen to an audible book just when you were cleaning the house, to pair a nice experience with the mundane experience , the mundane being cleaning ”OBS” as Giselle would say. But alas, there wasn’t much cleaning done, ( tidied my room though before I knew it though)
I have loved this read, I do not do Facebook or anything really, if I had friends I might like Isabella ( I want to give her her beautiful name ) But have always thought it might be a chore and Now I fully understand why. Its like a constant spin doctor that u need to feed in order to feel u fit in. Its amazing , a total change from “ don’t air your dirty laundry” to “ tell everyone the facts based in very thin truths, “ . Kerry , you have put in a book what I have thought but failed to really grasp the truth of. Very well written with characters I know so well. Brilliant, used up my audible credit in one go - I meant to make it last but could not help myself. I suffer from mental illness ( like Kate I’ll speak on social media for first time NOW and distraction from my own mind is always prescribed)
Kerry ,thank you for 46 hours of me - happy out - listening to a story well told xxX

Not For Me...
It might have been funny if it were better narrated, but as it is I found this book dreary and the women who constantly post fake versions of their lives on FB extremely irritating. They're like chavvy teenagers for goodness sake. In fact, I've had three teenagers of my own, my daughter being only just out of teenage-hood, and none of them has ever felt the need to behave that way. Such a cliche, no one wants to see what you eat and if you're unhappy, why bother posting lies? And what's with the hashtagging on FB? I'm sending it back because it made me cross, can you tell...?

Fabulous Read
I’m not sure why I chose this book, perhaps the title I guess as woman we change during our lives before kids, after marriage, before moving, after kids leave home etc etc
This was a very thought provoking booking it moved me to tears but had really positive and believable story lines with good outcomes. I’d certainly recommend it to my friends and other readers in our woman’s club so thank you for what you do

Brilliant!
Fantastic book. I knew before the end of the first chapter I was going to enjoy this. Loved the way each chapter was from a different person’s perspective, introducing each character and seeing how their lives intertwined. I felt Kate’s pain, Grisella’s excitement and later anxiety, Sally’s hurt and loved how their stories all came together. I never wanted it to end!

Relatable and Endearing
A particularly enjoyable story for women over 30. I laughed and got emotional and found myself nodding in agreement in certain moments. The characters were well written and as the layers were peeled back, a real affection for the characters was established.

I read this book on a recommendation and truly loved it and can't wait to read another of Kerry's books. The way she bought the character's in her book to an ending that was simply amazing
