Publisher's summary

“A haunting, beautifully written celebration of found sisterhood.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A fearless, engaging, and important memoir.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“[A] gorgeously rendered peek behind the curtain of military life.”—Booklist (starred review)

A captivating memoir that tells the story of one woman’s experience of joining a community of army wives after leaving her New York City job—a profoundly intimate look at marriage, friendship, and the power of human connection.

When her new husband joins an elite Army unit, Simone Gorrindo is uprooted from New York City and dropped into Columbus, Georgia. With her husband frequently deployed, Simone is left to find her place in this new world, alone—until she meets the wives.

Gorrindo gives us an intimate look into the inner lives of a remarkable group of women and a tender, unflinching portrait of a marriage. A love story, an unforgettable coming-of-age tale, and a bracing tour of the intractable divisions that plague our country today, The Wives offers a rare and powerful gift: a hopeful stitch in the fabric of a torn America.

Connection

Really connected to this story as an army brat and realize what my mom must’ve gone through.

AFFINITY

We don’t ever think of it from this side, do we? The battle not to get lost on the home front. Making all the sacrifices for the soldier’s calling. Imminently compelling, great storytelling, this memoir picked me up and placed me in a new world, where the wives matter, more and more and more and more. A sisterhood of affinity born of deep understanding and need.

Outstanding

This book is a tribute to friendships, life as a military wife, and so much more. I applaud this author for narrating her book, which is what sold me on purchasing it. The beauty of your writing flowed so eloquently through your voice. The front cover of your book is one of the prettiest I have seen. I am one who always reads the acknowledgements at the end. You were so thorough as you wrote this final part of your book. I was most touched by the words you wrote about your mother,father,mother-in-law,and last but not least, your husband. All I can hope is that there will be more future books by you that your readers will be able to enjoy. Well done Simone Gorrindo.

Her brutal honesty! Didn’t sugar coat a thing…

She was very honest, being a military wife is not easy, you have to be willing to accept whatever comes with understanding and a smile and a loving heart for your spouse if you are going to have a good relationship.

War, Wives, Sisterhood and Survival

They say you can't go home again, but The Wives proved me wrong. A place of such familiarity, even the mounting anxiety welling up in my body felt like a comforting cocoon. I knew the cycle of deployment all too well. The painstaking beginning, the mundane middle and the excruciating end. I couldn't stop reading. I knew I had to keep pushing forward, knowing the inherent transformation happening in the suffering. There's no shortage of stories on the bonds of brotherhood in arms. But the story of the sisterhood of the wives, a war story equally its own form of survival, so often goes untold. Thank you, Simone Gorrindo, for giving the world a glimpse into the lives behind the brown fences.

Beautiful book cover

I came across this new release over and over again while researching memoirs so one of my three stars goes to whoever was in charge of marketing. Second star for the gorgeous cover. Third star for solid writing. The story itself is slow paced and overly descriptive about things that in my opinion don’t matter to the story. There’s no major character arc for anyone. It’s a well written diary. As an army wife who experienced much longer deployment a decade before this, I was very excited to read, but the plot left me wishing for more interesting stories. I think it could have been a 6 hour book instead of 12 and still got the point across which is just painting a picture of this particular persons feelings and having babies seemed to solve her internal problems. Nothing but respect to the author, I understand the feelings, but the story line was too slow for me.
