Publisher's Summary

Forensic psychiatrist Kate Myers believes the killer of two teenage girls in Bigler County, California, is the same man who savagely murdered her twin sister over fifteen years ago. Working on sheer tenacity, she sets out to prove it.

Deputy Sheriff Ben Slater hides his personal pain behind the job, but Kate's arrival knocks his world on its axis. He wants to believe her wild theory, but the idea of a serial killer with this pathology is bizarre. Together, they work to find a killer whose roots began in a small town in Bigler County, but whose violence spread across the nation. Soon, the Janus-like killer, more monster than man, fixates on Kate and wants nothing more than to kill her "again."

Creepy and great!

Any additional comments?

Great story keeps you wondering. The bad guy was super creepy and the narrator made his laugh send chills down my spine.

Would have been 4 stars but sex got in the way!

Not a bad story, with good characters, but the story kept taking a back seat to the author's need to turn this into a steamy sex novel. I found it hard to believe that anyone as driven as Kate was to find this killer could continually get so derailed by working with a sexy partner. Could have been a much better book with a more subtle approach to the couple's sexual escapades.

Watcher the best book for audible

I found that this story was not at all what I expected. I figured it would be another missing person suspense. Not so. The book involves a wide range of characters with believable personalities. It is a very suspenseful story with so gruesome details. Yet it also involves an unlikely couple that both have been through there own life devistations. This brings into play unexpected romance. Very much enjoyed this book in audible. Highly suggest.

Good read and OK narration..

This was a book about “watcher” a serial killer that killed Kate’s twin sister, about 20 years ago. What I didn’t understand was why she told Slater about all the other victims and it wasn’t until almost 50% that she finally told him about Kassandra, her sister. Why? That didn’t make a bit of sense to me. And THEN when Slater didn’t tell her about his crazy ex-wife or his dead son Kate was PO’d at him and told herself she could forgive him but didn’t know if she could ever trust him again. What? What was the difference in the two things? His was just a personal matter while hers was part of a serial killer investigation. And THEN when she searched Sheriff Marconi’s office and found stuff and felt bad about not telling Slater, making excuses why she didn’t tell him. Really? WTH? This book was nowhere as good as book #2, which I read first.

Except for the above stupidity it really was a good story. I liked Kate and Slater, and Bauer. And I was sorry about Marconi. The last 15% was the most exciting. The race to find out who the killer was, putting all the clues together, getting a search warrant, racing to the killer’s house, searching the house and not finding him but knowing he was there somewhere. All of it happened so fast I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.

Again, as with 90% of authors who don’t know how to write sexual tension or sexual attraction, there was none in this book either, unless you consider Slater thinking there was sexual tension between them enough. Then just a couple of sex scenes plopped into the book.

There was a swearing and the F-bomb was released 5 times.

As to the narrator: He has a very nice reading voice but he’s nowhere near as good and Sebastian Fields, who read the second book in this series, The Avenger... Mr. Forge had only a few emotions through the entire book, but not nearly enough. When someone would say something and the next line was “he or she laughed,” there was NEVER a laugh, and that tells me a lot about a narrator. He’s not the worst narrator I’ve ever listened to but he certainly doesn’t compare to a lot of them. I wouldn’t go out of my way for something else he read but I wouldn’t NOT listened to a book he narrated.

I LOVE A SEXY MYSTERY

Any additional comments?

This was a really good story. This is more of a mystery than a romance.it was a true love story and I loved it. I read one reviewer say the sex got in the way of the story WTF🙄🙄🙄🙄. I don't want to follow this listener because he/she has no clue that for there to be romance THERE WILL BE SEX!!!! Thank goodness. Very Good Listen

Initial thoughts, not finished yet

Performance is lacking. The reading is slow (I had to bump up the speed) and mostly monotoned. Why is the reader giving southern accents to the northern California Sheriff's department personnel (but not all of them) and a British accent to the security guard at a gated community?

As far as details in the story, I can overlook a lot of things; however, when an injury is inflicted prior to death, it is an antemortem injury. It is NOT a "premortem" injury. Not only is that sloppy writing, it is sloppy editing. I was tempted to hit the delete button at that point. Anyone that has read a newspaper or novel) or watched a TV show or movie) will know the "antemortem" and "postmortem" definitions and know there is no such word as "premortem" used in medical or criminal fields.

Also, is the main detective dark skinned enough to appear black or not? Or is he only black when it's convenient (like to other blacks, but not yo whites)? Why does his "drop" of black blood have to even be mentioned? Why can't we just say he's of mixed race and leave it at that? Or, let's just have him be a black dude. There's a novel (pardon the pun) idea. The flip-flopping is annoying.

I probably won't remember to update this after I finish the book.

Don't think romance.

I only made it through the first three chapters when I decided I didn't want to listen anymore. This story had no romance through these chapters just a sick killer and it wasn't quite what I was looking for.
