Publisher's Summary

In the deep woods of East Texas, Henry supports his family by selling bootleg liquor. It's all he can do to keep his compassionate but ailing mother and his stepfather - a fanatical grassroots minister with a bruising rhetoric - from ruin. But they have no idea they've become the obsession of the girl in the woods.

Abandoned and nearly feral, Eve has been watching them, seduced by the notion of family - something she's known only in the most brutal sense. Soon she can't resist the temptation to get close. Where Henry's mother sees a poor girl in need, his father sees only wickedness. When Henry forges an unexpected bond with Eve, he believes he might be able to save her. He doesn't know how wrong he is.

Eve is about to take charge of her own destiny - and that of Henry's family. As both their worlds spin violently out of control, Henry must make an impossible choice: protect the broken young woman who's claimed a piece of his soul, or put everyone he loves at risk in order to do the right thing.

Meh

This book was "ok" not much good or bad to say about it.
As far as the narrator - EVERYTHING was too "epic". No matter what was happening, it was said with a somber ominous tone that added unneeded drama to a lot of parts.
The story - there were points where I wanted to scoff at the book for being completely illogical as far as character behaviors. There isn't much character arch to any of the characters. Very much a book to pass time. Not to sit on the edge of your seat for.

Great Characters

I️ almost didn’t listen to this book because the narrator’s voice in the first chapter totally turned me off. But I️ trudged through because the book sounded interesting... and it was! The narrator used different voices for the characters which helped keep the story straight and he also sounded like he was enjoying the read more as well. Lots of plot twists that kept me coming back to listen to more at every chance I️ could. Good mix of characters to love and hate; characters were fully developed. Really great storyline - I’d already recommended it to 3 other people before even finishing the book!

AWFUL

I couldn’t even bring myself to finish- I stopped 5hours into it. Theres no real depth to the characters- it’s just a bunch of terribly accented backwoods conversations between characters- and so much of it are the same the lines and phrases over and over.
The narration is terrible; the guy reads the story like he’s narrating an old episode of Forensic Files. Every sentence he reads has an ominous tone to it- so it doesn’t give you the right feel of the setting the author is trying to describe. I don’t understand how this book got so many great reviews

The Unremembered Girl

Very depressing story. It drags on and on to an unhappy ending. I will be hesitant to read anymore of this author's books.

What a ride!

I’m not surprised easily but this one got me. I didn’t see it coming. Brilliant writing! Good character development. Could have been a tad bit deeper into the characters but somehow the mild vagueness worked for these. Thanks for a great read! God bless.

Dumbest. Book. Ever.

It was like a train wreck. Listening irritated me, but I️ had to see it through.
What on earth is there to love -and love enough to throw your life away-about Feral Eve? We never find out. Her lack of personality? Her looks which aren’t remarked upon? She’s unable to read or write and barley speaks. It’s so frustrating.
I can’t even remember the other l plot holes and details that made me roll my eyes so hard I️ had a headache after every listening session.
The author has writing talent, but this book was awful.
The narrator was capable, but his cadence or voice was not quite right for my enjoyment.

Great plot...

It took me a while to get into the book. I starting listening and stopped a couple of times before deciding to stick with it and see it through. I really wanted to love the book. I feel as a general rule, I'm easy to impress when it comes to mystery/thriller type novels. I liked the plot and I was interested to see how it would play out in the end. I had a hard time loving any of the characters and never felt their absence when they left the story. But even after finishing the book, I'm unsure how the reader was supposed to feel about Eve. Were we suppose to love her? Hate her? I would have loved to have had some emotional investment into their love story but it happened before I even knew what was happening. One moment she's a wild animal and the next she and the protagonist have a soul-bonding kind of love. I never got the attraction to Eve. If anything, I wanted to shake Henry for being so silly. I think the storyline is something that would be worth reading again, with a little more character development and a little less time spent on meaningless conversations, and a little more time to help me form some kind of attachment to the characters. Did Henry see more of her personality than we did? How could he love just a shell of a person? That's how I perceived Eve. And while I understand she was "broken", I feel that's as far as we got. I would like to add, I feel the author is a strong writer in the ways she describes certain events and feelings. The writing felt very poetic at times.

Great Story could use cleaner language, though.

I really enjoyed the storyline of this book. I had a hard time stopping when I needed to go to bed or get something done. I didn't enjoy the profanity in the book. I did have to turn it off when my kids were in the car with me. It's a shame, too because my son was enjoying it as well until the profanity started.

Melodramatic literary rubbish!

I finished it hoping it would improve; it did not. Will Damron is an excellent narrator, but in this case he allows himself to get caught up in the melodrama. I regret purchasing this novel and I regret listening to it even more.

Emotional rollercoaster

I took my time, initially, reading a little then listening at night. At around chapter 20 all pretence of pacing myself went out of the window and I binged it 😝.

Will Damron is now a narrator I'll keep an eye out for. He made this fantastic story come to life.
