Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

More action than first two books combined.
The Oni Agent outbreak continues its rise to devastating levels across the globe. The infected, now called “Skulls” are evolving. The horn or scale-like protrusions on their bodies are growing, covering more of their body and becoming thicker, like armor. There also is a king-size version of the Skulls, called “Goliaths”; bigger, meaner, and more dangerous in every way. Another evolved version spits acid; they call these “Droolers”. Add to this the political climate is turning against Holland & crew as well. There are facets of government that definitely have conflicting visions of how things should be run (what’s new?). It is becoming evident that finding an antidote is taking second place to staying alive. Captain Holland & crew certainly have their work cut out for themselves and have difficulty determining who to trust. There seems to be more action and excitement in this third book than the first two combined.

Any additional comments?
A military consultant is needed. When military title, like Command Sergeant Major (CSM), is messed up it sticks out like a sore thumb. The CSM was referred to as the "Commander" Sergeant Major once. Ouch! the title is Command Sergeant Major

Zombies and monsters
Would you consider the audio edition of The Tide to be better than the print version?
I like the audio version, the voice actor is great & really gives a good voice to all the characters.
What did you like best about this story?
I like that the author has added all the different types of zombies - not just skulls. It really ups the level of scare in the book.
Have you listened to any of Ryan Kennard Burke’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, He's done a great job on this series. I'd look for other things preformed by him.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the hunters were escaping from the museum.

Story
a good mistake
Ok I will come clean… I’m an big fat idiot! I brought this title by mistake. Don’t ask me how because I just don’t know how. I certainly don’t have any money to burn… I am so poor that the ducks throw bread at me.
So with the confession of me being dumb and broke out of the way. I was thinking about going through the process of returning this title. I mean who would start listening to a series at Volume 3?
I thought I would just sample it before I made up my mind. I’m glad I didn’t return it, because as I ‘sampled’ the story, I soon discovered it was good enough to stand on it’s own merit.
Like I said this was the first I have heard of the series and I was generally intrigued by the story. It isn’t a normal zombie story. In fact the ‘zombies’ are more monsters like in the fashion from ‘Torment’ by Jeremy Bishop. Which was one of my first ever reviews… I loved that one as well!
I do have to get one gripe of my chest… the narration… it is just too slow! I easily listened to this one at 1.5x speed. I do normally listen to most titles at 1.25x speed but even at 1.5x speed on several occasions I wished I had a 1.75x option. In my view if a person has to increase the narration beyond 1.25x speed, then the customer is being ripped off in the adverts price of the title. 1.5x is just too much, it deceases the listening time dramatically! This in turn alters the $per listening hour ratio that people like me take into consideration.
I guess the best way to determine what I really thought about this title is for me to answer the question; ‘am I going to buy the 2 previous books in the series?’ The answer is no. I don’t think I need to.
But, and it is a big BUT (much like my own but) ‘am I going to purchase the next in the series’? And my answer would be ‘yes’.
I did like this one and I suspect those who are not as dumb as me. Those smarter people who actually started the series at number one would also be keen to see this series through to the end.
This fatman is giving this one a single handed ‘fonzie’ thumbs up and a ‘hey’. Not a two handed thumbs up and a ‘heeeeeeeeeeey’ mind you. But you never know, maybe the next in the series.

Detailed battle scenes
This is the third book in The Tide series. I'm continuing to enjoy the series because of the level of detail put into each battle scene. It could be argued that the plot is on a bit of a slow role, however, I find that this doesn't bother me in the least due to the amazing battle scenes.
The core of this third book is the search for medical supplies and a new human based thread which has emerged.
I'm eager to get into book four later this week.
