Pulling on the threads of your past is enough to kill you...

When a teenage islander goes missing on Burns Night, D.I. Duncan McAdam takes a strong interest despite the apparent lack of concern shown by the boy's father. When a woman's body is soon discovered in Talisker Bay, with a single stab wound to the chest, Duncan and his team realize they have a killer on the island.

A brutal winter storm is battering the island, and it soon becomes a race against time to find the missing boy. Is he hiding or is someone keeping him from coming home? As the team delve deeper into the lives of the teenager and the deceased, they come to the conclusion that nothing is quite what it seems and more than one person has a vested interest in concealing the truth.

A closely guarded secret, lying in a shallow grave for years, is under threat of being revealed and no one seems willing to face up to their past... least of all, Duncan McAdam himself. Duncan has a decision to make, one that will impact not only his life but the lives of those he cares about the most. Does he have the courage to follow his instincts? And just who is he acting in the interests of... the people he loves, or purely for himself?

The Talisker Dead is the third book in the new Misty Isle series of crime thrillers from the Amazon #1 multi-million selling crime writer, J M Dalgliesh, the author of the Hidden Norfolk and Dark Yorkshire books.

Love Angus King’s narration! He brings the characters to life so vividly. In my mind, he is the best.

The twists and turns.

Winter on the Isle of Skye must really suck. But it runs throughout the story. Part of this series puts the Isle of Skye into a romantic light but I'm sure the reality is not so good. According to the stories summers are good and many from the mainland have summer homes here, some people invest in homes and make the AirBnb or Vrrbo places.

Duncan finds himself in another good mystery taking him all over the island. An integral part to this story finds him needing to interview the son he's just found out his hand. His relationship with the son, the mother, the stepfather are play central parts in this book. And, by now you are caught in this family story.

I wish he'd finish renovating the family home he's moving back into and get out of his caravan!

I do hope there will be another few books in the works for this series. I’d love to hear more. I’ve enjoyed the stories in this series so far, though book 1 and 2 have some weird plot similarities. The narrator is terrific with the men’s voices, but I almost wish they’d get a woman to read the female voices, though. That said, it’s still overall an engrossing series.

Looking forward to #4

This is a great series with credible, dimensional characters that develop in each new book. The crimes at the center of each are revelatory not only of the people who commit them but the complexities and beauty of island life itself.

A good story well read.

snow and weather information probably took up 20% of the story.
personal life of the detective makes it a series the reader can become involved in, which I like.

too much weather.

I enjoy a series in which we learn more about the characters and the locale with each book. It's like moving into a new neighborhood and slowly feeling comfortable with the surroundings - even if the occasional neighbor is done away with. When I finished "The Talisker Dead" I decided that, someday, I will visit Portree, but only after I make my way to Three Pines.

Thanks, Angus King, for reading me a story.

Very good book

I’m really enjoying this series. The author does indulgent dangling particles from time to time, but that might even be a cultural thing. Perhaps the grammar is different in Scotland. I find Becky to be a major turn off. She’s mostly angry and manipulative. Using the sun to lure Duncan in and then pushing him away. She’s a game player. I really hope Duncan doesn’t wind up with her. The atmosphere that the author creates is compelling. As bad as the weather seems to be, I would love to make it to the islands.. Of course I’ve seen pictures of Scotland and the islands and it’s in my top five places to visit.

Great writing
