Publisher's Summary

From the acclaimed author of Revealed comes a tale of first loves and second chances. Lady Jane Cummings is certain that her summer is ruined when she is forced to reside at isolated Merrymere Lake with her reckless brother and ailing father. Her fast-paced London society is replaced with a small town grapevine. But one bit of gossip catches Jane's attention - rumors that the lake's brooding new resident is also an elusive highwayman.

Jane must face the much discussed mysterioso after he saves her brother from a pub brawl. She immediately recognizes him from London: Byrne Worth, war hero and apparent hermit - whom she finds strangely charming. The two build a fast friendship, and soon nothing can keep this Lady away from Merrymere's most wanted. Convinced of his innocence, Jane is determined to clear Byrne's name - and maybe have a little fun this summer after all.

Slow Start - Big Finish

I've thoroughly enjoyed the Blue Raven series. This book took a bit longer to get started. Too much emphasis on secondary characters before main characters's story got rolling. Once it did get going it did not disappoint. Even a slow start is not enough to deter. If you like historical romances Kate Noble is a must!

Too Many Disagreeable Characters

My interest in a bit of escapism has collided with the reality of how controlled women were in this era by men who were less capable than they. Brother Jason is, in a word: a Jerk. To use a few more words, he's selfish, insensitive and autocratic.

In addition to Jason's unappealing qualities, the characters who people the village in which the story is set are nearly all suspicious, devious and mean-spirited.

I read non-fiction to improve my mind. I read these Audible Escapes to do this that: escape. As I do not want to spend my leisure time with this many disagreeable people, I'm quitting half-way in before I become as crochety as the village folk.

Slow beginning

Good book. The first one was better I think. But it did pick up halfway through and make for a good read.

The buzzing

I really liked the book, but there was a strange buzzing in chapter 23 that made my dog lose it. That’s not on the narrator, though. She does a good job distinguishing between characters and inflections. Overall, good story. I really liked getting to know Jane after the previous story she was in.

Okay

I liked the first one better. This was okay too, though it had a few slow sections. In general, this is a pretty good writer, but this series needs a strong developmental editor to cut them and make the content and pace crisper. A few things made it less enjoyable for me. I’m rarely fond of children having a role in the storylines (unless it’s as an aside). Their high, squeaking voices and antics can get annoying, and often their parts just seem like filler. Another disruptive thing was the point of view changed frequently. It can be jarring for different characters to be telling the story through their own eyes. Some aspects of the story and the main couple were interesting. Much of the town was perpetually suspicious and antagonistic without cause, which was fatiguing.

The author is very good at trusting the reader to get the subtle humor and meanings behind dialog without over explaining—a rarity in this genre. For that reason alone, I will keep reading her work.

The narrator is excellent at capturing the mood, tone, humor, and pace.

Keeps you interested till the end

Great story and narration. I love the fact that the narrator keeps the same voices for the characters throughout the series.

Second book in the series did not disappoint!

I loved this one as much as the first! It is not easy to make me laugh out loud, but my daughter said I did so multiple times while listening to this book. But if also had me guessing to the end to figure out the identities of all the villains!

Quite unique! Made me so happy.

Really clever writing! Didn’t insult the intelligence of the reader by over-explaining everything. Funny, charming, nuanced characters and just as great secondary characters. Strong plot. Listening to this was just a treat! Loved the ending; it was exciting and included most of the key characters. Epilogue was also different, creative, original, fun.

Great story

The characters were described in a manner that makes them so engaging and likable. Also, the narrator is one of the best I’ve ever listened to, she has such great inflection and I was only upset when the book was over. Loved this trilogy and was soooo entertained!!!

Charming!

This story included all the elements I expect from a good romance: charm, whit, fine humor and compassion.
The portrayal of the Duke's dementia was done with empathy.
The narration was also superb.
