Publisher's Summary

Can a gentle werewolf heal the heart of a smart-mouthed mage?

New York Times best-seller Gail Carriger, writing as GL Carriger, presents an offbeat gay romance in which a sexy werewolf with a white knight complex meets a bad-boy mage with an attitude problem. Sparks (and other things) fly.

Max fails everything - magic, relationships, life. So he works for DURPS (the DMV for supernatural creatures) as a sumage, cleaning up other mages' messes. The job sucks and he is in no mood to cope with redneck biker werewolves. Unfortunately, there is something oddly appealing about the huge, muscled Beta visiting his office for processing.

Bryan AKA Biff (yeah, he knows) is gay but he is not out. There is a good chance Max might be reason enough to leave the closet, if he can only get the man to go on a date. Everyone knows werewolves hate mages, but Bryan is determined to prove everyone wrong, even the mage in question.

a joy to listen to

I read the book when it was released, then listened to it two weeks later because I loved the story that much.

Biff is a big, wonderful sweetie-pie of a werewolf. Max is TROUBLE, a failed mage with a huge attitude problem.

This book is great. There is a big cast of well-drawn characters, an interesting plot, snappy dialogue, hot sex, and love. Lots of love.

Also, if the author happens to see this review, there better be sequels! I want Colin's story. And Lovejoy's, too.

The narrator did a great job. The character voices are nicely distinct and pleasant to listen to. I hope he gets to narrate the next one (fingers crossed).

Meh

The romance was sweet, but the story was a bit slow. It was too slow getting started. I got kind of bored. There was to much repetition. By the end, I was curious about where things were going to go in the series, but it took too long to get there. The narration was okay, but could have better defined voices.

Beyond Brilliant

Two days later, after having finished my first read/listen of this book and I'm still suffering book-hangover.... You know, that feeling where you really want to stay in the story; yes, that one. I'm actually kicking myself for waiting till it dropped on Audible, and then only because I needed a new listen, as, while I loved the early Parasol Protectorate novels the final one did a "Tolkien" on me with effectively the feeling that the magic went away.
So, I admit I was a bit wary starting a new Carriger series... but OMG... Next, please, now.

Kirt Graves, as a narrator, hit this one so far out the park that it's landed in the next country. The voices, the tone, the whole feel, was perfect. Though that may also have been in part because of the production values in the actual recording. Trick like making thoughts sound "hollowish" in comparison to things voiced aloud worked.

Just the right amount of angst. A pefect balance point of a Happy Ever After with a springboard to the next book (Yes, Gail, I am looking at you and hoping you are writing it as I type because I want more Max and Biff). Fantastic narration.... Yes, this wins my vote for best I've listened to this year and I've listed to some amazing stories.

Missing some world building...

Any additional comments?

Dual POV from sumage Max and werewolf Bryan, this is a paranormal romance with a lot of humor, banter, and sex.

Even though this is marketed as a standalone I felt the world building really lacked focus and explanation. I felt dropped inside a paranormal world with little to no explanation of how or why things worked. There are a lot of different types of shifters, magicians and humans, and a thing called quintessence that magical folk can manipulate, but I have to be honest that after ten hours listening I'm still not really sure what it actually is.

I honestly expected to find a far more complex story, but instead got one quite a bit lighter in tone.

I'm not going to lie...this took a few hours to get into and if I hadn't been reviewing it I might have put it down. Kirt Graves kept me going on this one.

Graves is good at providing clear character voices for all of the characters (and there are A LOT), and I was able to easily follow along with who was speaking. The narration is steadily paced and without a lot of over the top emotional inflection or performance.

I really liked that Graves put some extra touches into the audio like the vibration of a cell phone or text alert, which made it feel a little more interactive without being intrusive about it.

It did take me a bit of time to get used to the different audio sound Graves uses to denote the internal dialogue of the characters. There is a lot of internal dialogue. A lot. Which on one hand was good considering Bryan is the strong and silent type so we get a lot of his character development through his internal musings, but on the other hand, was also a lot.

Speaking of character development...the story lacks quite a bit in this area, in my opinion. I kept waiting for more, but it never came, which was really disappointing.

If you're okay with more of a True Mates sexy times kind of story with a lot of humor rather than one that has more complex world building and character development you should definitely check this out.

I loved it!

I'm a huge audiobook listener but I'd never listened to Kirt Graves before. His narration is fantastic! Every character had a distinct voice and there are many lovable characters in this story. But not so many active ones that you'll get confused or distracted from the story.
There's not a huge amount of character development in the main characters, but you can definitely get a feel for both of them and what their lives were like as youngsters.
I will look forward to reading more in this series.

So glad I stuck with it

I was unsure at first, the odd mix of banter and comedic internal dialogue had me wondering if the book could hold my interest. But the way everything played out had me invested in the whole cast. I used to live in Marin County so hearing about my old stomping grounds with the fantastical twist brought me joy (odd pronunciation aside. I've never heard it as "Marr-in" but "Muh-rin", but that's nitpicking). I got way invested in Max and Biff. And the entire pack. The ups and downs and the angst had me hooked. I didn't see the twist coming, and when the big twist was revealed I couldn't stop listening. I covered the book in full over two night shifts and I'm excited to start the prequel tomorrow. I really hope the author writes a continuation!

Fabulous reading

This is one of my favorite books and one I reread often. I had very high hopes for this recording and was not disappointed! I enjoyed this audio book very much. The narrator was excellent and I look forward to listening to more by him.

Not much of a story

Unfortunately, this book really isn't much of a story. It feels like only the first few chapters of a story, as though we've only just gotten past introducing the important characters and discovered the proper crux of the plot and it is just over. I kinda hate to say it, but it almost feels like an angst-ridden "get them together" fanfic... without a whole lot of plot, and it makes me want to read the "real" story. There isn't much I can say without a lot of spoilers, but I want to know more about that little book and its implications (and what would happen if were to somehow, mysteriously, end up on the internet), more about the wider supernatural society and power structure (just how much power DO the judges have?), more about Max's new role in that society and what he does and doesn't do with it, and how much he can grow up in that role. So much potential, very little followthrough which is a pity, because I know from Carriger's Finishing School and Parasol Protectorate series that the author is very capable of more.

Great story

Loved it! I've read the book several times but wanted to give the audio version a try. I've really enjoyed the life that Kirt brought to the characters that were already close to my heart.

San Francisco werewolves!

First full book in the San Andreas Shifters series from GL Carriger (Gail Carriger's writing with more explicit sex scenes). It's a warm story of self-acceptance, found family and a werewolf - mage courtship :) The narrator has great voice, and gives all characters their own feel. A lovely listen.

great book

I loved both the story and the performance. Great LGBTQ characters and fun setting. I can't wait to see what happens next in this universe and how all the characters develop. This is my first full audiobook and I think I'm a convert. I already really enjoy Carriger's work in other series and loved the prequel to this, I'm so glad I finally got to hear this. From the snarky characters, distinct personalities and local knowledge to the wonderful universe it was a great ride. My fave character was Gladi, but she might have some competition from one of the later arrivals! Kirt Graves is a great narrator, and the use of accents and tones used to indicate different characters or narrative devices was great.

Wasn’t Sure What To Expect...

But I have been surprisingly entertained, loved the puns and the individual characters brought to life by Kirt Graves. The storyline is fluid, the characters amusing but the main characters Max and Bryan (Biff) are a match made in heaven. Absolutely loved this audiobook and hope that the author will write more stories about Max & Bryan in this series - as we have to find out what the new turn of events will mean for the powerful duo. So if you’re reading this review (@ GL Carriger), please write more stories for this great couple?!! If you like Ann Kathryn-Byrd’s Mercy Hills Pack Shifters and TJ Klune’s Green Creek series, you will definitely love this! I Highly recommend! Keep up the good work 😊

Fab new series, very well narrated

This is a great shifter story, with interesting twists linked to the the main characters Brian and Max. You don't need to have read the short prequel Marine Biology first (I didn't), but having just finished it I did find it helped with context in that it describes how the pack came together and why they were on the west coast. Great read/listen, highly recommended. Just starting on the next in the series and can't wait for more.

Great new series

I love these characters. I don't know how Ms Carriger does it but she has this knack of combining perfectly relatable characters, with an interesting plot. I just love her work and even though The Sumage Solution is different from her Steampunk novels, the stories are just as enthralling. Would highly recommend.

An excellent story, brilliantly narrated

This is the second book in the San Francisco Shifters series, and is very funny. Whilst the core of the story is a M/M romance between Max (a Sumage) and Bryan (a beta werewolf), there is so much fun and fighting, sass and action - of the literal kind! - there is very little time for action of the other kind. But the relationship between Max and Bryan is very sweet when it finally gets going, and you can't help but root for them. Overall, an excellent story, brilliantly narrated by Kirt Graves, and I'd definitely recommend it to all fans of the series and supernatural/paranormal romances who don't mind the gay relationship content.

A great new story

Unlike some of her other work, this series is set in the modern world (with werewolves etc!!). This is a great story. The leads are gay werewolves, with the struggles you may imagine that can entail. loved the characters, story and romance (although not for younger listeners!) .
