Publisher's Summary

In this tautly crafted tale of psychological suspense, a recently widowed mother resorts to the unthinkable to protect her shattered family. But does she go too far?

After mystery author Diane Christie loses her husband to suicide, she and her son move to the small coastal town of Fog Harbor, Massachusetts. Her daughter is attending college nearby, and Diane hopes that her family can now begin to heal. But rebuilding their lives after the tragedy isn't so simple.

Diane's depressed college-age daughter, Alexa, still avoids her, critical of everything Diane does, and even her generally amiable teenage son, Josh, has started acting out. Diane pushes forward, focusing on her writing and her volunteer work at a local crisis hotline. She knows that healing takes time.

But then a girl from Alexa's college is found strangled. Worse still, the murderer uses the crisis hotline to confess to Diane...and claims she is the only one who can stop the killing. And just when the glow of new love from an attractive admirer begins to chase away some of the darkness, more girls turn up dead, and Diane races to solve a mystery she fears will hit terrifyingly close to home.

Could easily have been a 5 star book...

Would you be willing to try another book from Jennifer Jaynes? Why or why not?

With out a doubt.

What does Tanya Eby bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think Tanya Eby is an excellent narrator. I do think she added to this book.

Any additional comments?

This book started out with a bang. There were murders of college women, ruminations from a troubled mind, a single mother who writes mystery books, a daughter who seems to do what ever it takes to embarrass her mom and an adopted son who is sickly. Everyone is a suspect and no one can be trusted.
This all is great and the story moves right along. Then here comes a slightly predictable conclusion to the killings and that was ok. It's what follows that that made me almost want to throw my iPod across the room! After this believable story to have such a far fetched ending just blew me away! I don't want to give anything away but I am interested in what other people think. But for me the ending brings this book down from 4 to 3 stars.

Superb psychological thriller until...

....the last 30 minutes. A committee of monkeys could have come up with a better ending. What was the author thinking? Even with 7 great hours of action and suspense and with flawless narration by Tanya Eby I cannot give this novel more than 2 stars due to the awful conclusion.

ending sucked

you can't escape consequences and you shouldn't teach that it's ok. it's not ok, I don't care how much you love you kids. wish I hadn't wanted my time on this book

Great book until the last couple of chapters

I really enjoyed this book. The character development, the building suspense, the big reveal - great story. But the resolution left me shaking my head. It ruined the book for me.

Oh blah!

This book started out good and was suspenseful and chilling. However things god from good, to bad and then to worse. In trying for an expected 'twist', the author chooses a most unlikely suspect. So unlikely that it's preposterous. Disappointing!

A slight spoiler please be advised

Firstly this is the second book of hers I read. The first was disturbed, intact I read it twice and it was just as good as the first time. I’ve been flying through unlimited mysteries rolling my eyes so often that sometimes I don’t slow down to look closer at the book that actually intrigue me. So I decided to read more from this author and for most of the book it didn’t disappoint. If fact I never saw the twist. Most of these books are so obvious that I was certain it was the more obvious of charters but not so.... Now, As most are saying the ending was very disappointing. I think they could have gone on as a family and faced the consequences. I even thought maybe an epilogue could have been added, where the family has shacked up in a place, away from the world, doing well, when one day Diane cannot find their dog.... and then the book ends...

Terrible stinker

I usually don’t make written reviews however I had to make an exception in this case hopefully to spare some other poor reader out there from wasting their time or money! This book has to be one of the most cheesy, ridiculous, whiny, frustratingly stupid stories I’ve ever read. Only two characters in the story were even remotely believable or likable and one of those was the stray dog. The story features characters that represent a bit of everything that’s wrong with our culture today: Lousy parenting, excuses for bad behavior, not holding people accountable for their bad behaviors, etc... Lead character was particularly weak and annoying.
The narration is terrible. The attempt at male voices was astoundingly grating. I wanted to stop listening by the second chapter, but out of respect for any writer (and that I actually paid for this crap) I decided to ride this one out. By half way, I figured I’d keep listening just to see how idiotic this story would become. Please, do not waste your time or your money dear reader! This is a STINKER!

Very enjoyable

This is the first book I've read of Jennifer Jayne's and she is now right up there on top of my list of favorites. The narrator, Tanya Eby gave a wonderful performance. I really enjoyed this mystery very much I did not see the Whodunnit much less the ending. I would highly recommend this book to those who like Mysteries.

Pathological moral values!

Book was great, until the end. What a distorted view of right vs wrong and evil. Ruined the whole book. This author just encourages people to justify their actions to make themselves feel better regardless of the consequences. I can only assume the author has a very poor character. I won’t read another book

Very here there n every where

Jacqui
I tried to give it a go The actor who performed it was good and I’ve listened to her and liked her before but the story cut to each piece messily and wen it got to 1 hour before end I could not take it anymore. The way the killer who most of us listening would already know was revield was so clumsy I couldn’t take anymore. Therefore I give it 2 stars for the story it really should have been more connected and moved from one part to another but was patchworked
