I thought I'd left Blackwater, Texas, behind for good. I didn't belong in the small town, but my dad wouldn't listen. He dragged me back home in his beat-up truck and dropped a bomb along the way: Chase Matthews was moving in with us. He was the golden boy of my high school, my former best friend, and the last person I wanted sleeping across the hall. His presence was too great a reminder of the ghosts I was trying to forget.

A delight
An interesting multigenerational tale. The best narration I’ve heard to date. She moves seamlessly from English to Spanish to English words spoken with a Spanish accent. A joy to the ear.

I believe this is a story more appropriately listed for YA. It was a good tale. But a bit simple in telling a few too many trite similes.

Intriguing!
I really enjoyed this story of the storytellers. I don't think I've heard anything quite like this before. It was quite enjoyable and flowed well. Definitely recommend.

Great story
I feel Iike this story will resonate more with immigrant families who are trying to break multigenerational traumas
And that’s quite possibly why some people did not enjoy it
As part of the younger Latino generation it put into perspective our efforts to put an end to colorism as well as our struggles with self identity and feeling like you don’t fit in with either of your cultures.
It was very well told and Marisol did an amazing job narrarating

Sweet and honest
Very sweet story with touches of magical realism. I enjoyed the Puerto Rico setting. The author does not shy away from issues like racism, classism, cultural caste systems, addiction, and politics. I like how the author inserted these issues into the story delicately and not heavy-handedly. Well done.

Delightful!
The poignant unfolding mystery keeps you emotionally invested in the characters. By the end, you are sad to leave your friends behind but hopeful for their future. I can’t wait for Ann Davila Cardinal’s next book!
