About this listen

God has fallen and the Devil is dead. Heaven, once paradise, now lies crumbling, ruinous and infested. It is a vile nest for an ancient evil that has its sights set on humanity.

Only Death, and the peculiar band of souls that he has managed to smuggle to safety, are left to resist this threat. Can a marine commander, a samurai, a thief, and an axe-wielding highland warrior succeed where both God and Lucifer failed?

Can Death finally find redemption for the most ancient of all sins?

Great story and performance

The story kept me transfixed from start to finish--I only wish it had been much longer, as I didn't want it to end. The narrator was fabulous, and really brought each character to life. Really a fun book!

Deaths army is calling

The author waste no time with this one. He plows head first right into the story. There's action from the tip off to the buzzer. Characters are not overly developed, but they don't need to be. They simply are who they are. Good Listen!

Interesting

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and any opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is the second book by Nicholas Carey that I have read. This book and his first, "Carnival of the Night," deal with similar themes [afterlife - Heaven, Hell, Purgatory]. While I liked both books, I enjoyed "Carnival..." more. I, somehow, felt a bit disengaged from this story - not really connecting with any of the characters and felt the religious themes/discussions, for me, were a bit heavy handed.

Both of Carey's books are narrated by Christopher Graybill, who is outstanding. He has a real talent for pulling you into the story/world and keeping you engaged with it.

Original twist on Creation and Damnation

I received a free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

The Smuggler of Souls is a really interesting pastiche of ancient Middle Eastern and medieval Christian creation and damnation stories. Really, this was a most interesting twist on the original foundational Chaos and the Wars of Heaven, combined with the common fantasy story of a small band of mismatched heroes saving the world.

I really enjoyed the twistiness of the story, as dark as it was. And it had a satisfactory, if not happy, ending for the actors in the drama, although I'd have liked to see a little more of the widespread implications for rebuilding and repopulating Heaven and Hell.

The Last Soul...A Navy Seal

Requested a free code for the book, no strings attached.

This was a very interesting book about the final battle for Heaven. The characters were well done and the story was engaging. The author explores the personification of Death and the End Times. I enjoyed learning about the world. It was an enjoyable listen. I will be on the lookout for more of the author's work. Check out his work The Carnival of the Night. It also had interesting world building.

The narrator Chris Graybill does it again with another fantastic narration! This is my third book I have listened to with him narrating and he does a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. I wouldn't realize it was the same narrator if I wasn't paying attention. Check him out in The Electric Detective and The Carnival of the Night.

Fascinating creative story

This is a very interesting story. Death creates an army of souls to retake heaven from invaders. And he can choose from a wide variety of people past and present. The whole time I was listening, I was thinking that not all that long ago, the author would have been tried for blasphemy for writing this, and I would have been tried for owning and listening. So if you have strong religious feelings, this may not be for you. But the array of characters is wonderful.

All characters were voiced expertly by Christopher Graybill. He has a strong voice for narration, plus an excellent ability to voice males, females, and assorted accents to help keep the individuals separate in the story.
