Publisher's Summary

She said she’d gone to a sleepover. But she never made it. Someone must know why....

When Detective Natalie Ward is called to the home of 14-year-old Roxy Curtis she can’t help but empathise with Roxy’s distraught mother Cathy. Roxy hasn’t come home, last seen heading next door for a sleepover with her best friend Ellie. As the mother of two teenagers herself, Natalie knows that this is every parent’s worst nightmare.

But when Roxy’s body is found in the basement of a beautiful Victorian mansion on the other side of town, Natalie’s darkest fears are confirmed. What was Roxy doing there? The people who knew her best should know - but Cathy seems evasive, and Ellie refuses to talk. Natalie is determined to find out what secrets they are keeping....

Then Roxy’s mother Cathy disappears.

When her body is found two days later, Natalie is forced to face the fact that Roxy’s loved ones are in real danger. Things take a more sinister turn when Ellie vanishes, her mobile phone switched off. Is Ellie hiding something about the night Roxy died that could put her in terrible danger? And can Natalie work it out before another innocent life is taken?

Gripping, fast-paced, and nail-bitingly tense, this book will keep you enthralled long into the night. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, and Karin Slaughter.

Best of the series so far

This series keeps getting better. This was quite a story with several different leads that all seem plausible. I like that I wasn’t able to guess the who-done-it.

The characters have been well developed over the series. The narration was well done.

This series gets better and better

With every new instalment of the DI Natalie Ward series, I become more and more addicted.

Not once have I figured out whodunnit before this author has felt good and ready to reveal the conclusion, which is very gratifying when you’re having the clues revealed to you at the same time DI Ward learns them.

The character development across this series is unreal, in both the work and domestic lives of every member of DI Ward’s team – the focus has shifted a little this time, more on the characters that took a back seat in the last book. I find myself being genuinely excited for the character who is waiting for the birth of her first child, and WANTING NATALIE TO MURDER HER HUSBAND IN COLD BLOOD AND GET AWAY WITH IT BECAUSE SHE’S A DETECTIVE. I have an ongoing hatred of that man, it’s only getting worse…

The other thing that sets this story apart from the earlier instalments in the series is that the characters are from a poor background and people seem to care considerably less when locals turn up dead, even when they’re teenage girls. It adds a new dimension and makes it all sadder, despite the reactions of some of the characters.

There’s something special about these murder investigations because everything sounds very realistic, not least because the audiobook is narrated by Diana magic-jukebox Croft. Her accents and voices are amazing, it really is hard to believe that there’s only one voice at work here.

So yeah – in conclusion: this book is amazing, listen to the audiobook and thank me later.

Enjoyable series

I’m listening to this series one after the other so it’s difficult to find things much to say. However, the characters have developed nicely and this was the most entertaining one so far.

Bedtime reading!

Very disappointing, I kept expecting this book to become exciting. It didn't. In fact towards the end it sent me to sleep beautifully!
The Narration was the only good thing about the book however.
In a Nutshell, think Agatha Christie meets Miss Marple without a modicum of interest and you have this book sussed.

It was average

An average story with an anticlimactic ending. Bit of a waste of time. Not her best work.

Wasn't as gripping as the others in this series

The Sleepover is more predictable though does end making you want more. Not a bad book, just prefer the others.
