Publisher's summary

Did you know that historians believe slaves constituted at least 20 percent of the Roman Republic’s population?

In ancient Rome, the use of slave labor in all levels of society was a part of the natural order. Eventually, like with any other empire, these less fortunate individuals, who found themselves with fewer rights than even livestock, would find the courage to stand up and fight for freedom against their all-powerful masters.

These revolts would turn into all-out wars and go down in the annals of time as the Servile Wars. The men and generals that fought in these conflicts would find their names forever written in the tomes of history. Some would be immortalized as heroes who stood up against tyranny, and others would be villainized. But no one could argue that these uprisings were the catalysts for change.

In this audiobook, you will learn about:

  • Slavery in ancient Rome
  • How Sicily was a hotbed for slave rebellions
  • How Spartacus brought southern Italy to its knees
  • The life of a gladiator
  • How the slave revolts changed the Roman Republic
  • Why the Roman Colosseum was built
  • How the gladiator games were carried out
  • And so much more!

The Servile Wars

I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting to learn about the huge population of Roman society that was slaves and the Gladiators.

Excellent History of slave revolts against Rome

This work continues the excellence of works from Captivating History. The three servile wars, slave revolts, are covered in a good depth and at a great pace and pattern. Some of the background including information about gladiators adds a great extra knowledge of items from the Roman Republic and later Empire.

Enjoyable and interesting

Well written, concise but detailed, enjoyable to listen to. Jason Zenobia may be CH's best narrator as well.

Provides context and analysis of the slave revolts

The story of Spartacus and the third Servile War are familiar to most. This book also puts that war and the two previous wars into a coherent story in a very engaging manner. I like the format that describes the conditions and build up to each war and how the Roman republic perceived and dealt with each one. The book does well explaining the culture and causes of each of the revolts and how each lead to the next and finally to a change in how Rome dealt with slavery eventually.

Very well told and Jason Zenobia's narration is excellent.
