Publisher's summary

From the internationally best-selling author of the Sword of Truth series comes a new Richard and Kahlan novella.

"They are the monsters under the bed when you are little, the shape just caught out of the corner of your eye when you thought you were alone, the shadow of something in a dark corner that surprises you and then isn't there. They stop you dead with a knot of unexpected terror in the pit of your stomach. We have all seen fleeting glimpses of them. Never long enough to see them as I saw them, but it was them. I recognized it the instant I saw it. We've all seen flashes of them, the dark shadow just out of sight. They could briefly terrify us before but never hurt us because they came from so far distant. They were never able to fully materialize in our world so we saw only transient glimpses of them, the shape of them if the light was just right, if the shadows were deep enough...if you were afraid enough. I think that the star shift has brought us closer to their realm so that they now have the power to step into our world and hurt us." (Kahlan Amnell)

great intro to a story, but too short for a novel.

I love where this story is going, however it reads like the prologue to the story and then ends abruptly. I love the Richard and Kaylin stories and the Nicci Chronicles, but this should have been offered to the fans for free as a teaser for the first of many novels in a continuing story arc. I am a long time Terry Goodkind fan, and I would have gladly read this(what should have been an) excerpt and pre-ordered the coming novel. even if it came with the stipulation that there would be a long wait til the writer had time to properly flesh it out.

Part 1 of 5 so far, not worth it, clear money grab

This was a great start to a book. I felt like I got ripped off thought, this clearly was a book that got split up into multiple books and it feels like an abrupt transition with no real ending. and no, not a cliff hanger. Those suck and shouldn't be done with books. This was worse, it was like watching 20 minutes of Titanic or Casino and learning you needed to buy it in parts to finish. Or if those are too old, it like watching Harry Potter and it ending right as he arrives at Hogwarts. Now you get the privilege of buying 5 more movies just to finish the sorcerers stone. You begin to see the problem.

Too Short

This book is three hours and 50 minutes long. It finished as soon as it got started, it seemed. I am used to Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series books being 15, 18, or 20+ hours long. It seems like Terry has moved away from this into more short stories. I am not a fan of it mainly because I am listening to these on audible, and it cost me a full credit for less than four hours of read time. Because it was so short, it felt like they didn’t put as much depth into introducing us to the new characters or developing the storyline that we would normally have. I read Terry Goodkind novels because I love 800+ page books, and not this short novellas.

Rhal Reign Continues

I'm so happy that the story of Richard & Kahlan is back! This is an exciting book with a cliff hanger ending.

Terry Goodkind i a genius as usual in storytelling

I really loved the story, I just wish it didn't end so abruptly. I think there was way more to tell I, and the story sounds like it can go somewhere. Maybe he's going to write another one continue the storyline.

great story, bad narrator

the book is great. the narrator was the wrong voice for Richard. I felt he listened to the Nicci Chronicles and took her same inflection and harshness in words.

Great addition to SOT

Wish I could buy outright and save the credits for a full book. Should have made the first 3-4 books one. Then start next book with the volume that is like 15 hrs long.
