Publisher's summary

1333. Edward III is at war with Scotland. Nineteen-year-old Sir Harry de Lyon yearns to prove himself and jumps at the chance when a powerful English baron, William Montagu, invites him on a secret mission with a dozen elite knights.

They ride north, to a crumbling Scottish keep, capturing a feral, half-starved boy within and putting the other inhabitants to the sword.

But nobody knows why the flower of English knighthood snuck over the border to capture a savage, dirty teenage boy. Montagu gives the boy to Harry as his squire, with only two rules: don't let him escape, and convert him to the English cause.

At first, it's hopeless. The Scottish boy is surly and violent and eats anything that isn't nailed down. Then Harry begins to notice things: that, as well as Gaelic, the boy speaks flawless French, with an accent much different from Harry's Norman one. That he can read Latin too. And when Harry finally convinces the boy – Iain mac Maíl Coluim – to cut his filthy curtain of hair, the face revealed is the most beautiful thing Harry has ever seen.

With Iain as his squire, Harry wins tournament after tournament and becomes a favourite of the King. But underneath the pageantry smoulder twin secrets: Harry and Iain's growing passion for each other, and Iain's mysterious heritage. As England hurtles towards war once again, these secrets will destroy everything Harry holds dear.

A sexy, slow-burn enemies-to-lovers historical romance, Alex De Campi delivers a steamy but tender love story. "Brokeback Mountain" meets "50 Shades of Grey" set again the vivid backdrop of Medieval Britain. Perfect for fans of Madeline Miller's Song of Achilles, the novels of C. S. Pacat, and K.J. Charles.

This novel contains explicit sexual content and adult themes.

Alex de Campi is a thriller writer with an extensive backlist of critically-acclaimed prose and graphic novels including Eisner-nominated heist noir Bad Girls (Simon & Schuster). Her most recent books were pulp horror graphic novel Dracula, Motherf**ker (Image Comics), sci-fi thriller Madi: Once Upon A Time in the Future co-written with Duncan Jones (Z2 Comics), and True War Stories, an anthology of soldiers’ deployment tales. Beautiful Heartfelt Writing

Great characters, well written, suspenseful, couldn’t set the book down, Harry’s descriptions, I could see in my mind what he was seeing in telling his story.

The spice is hot and the plot is juicy!

A lot of romance is just p0rn with a vague plot wrapped around it, but not this story! If you took out every s3x scene it would still be a fantastic book. The characters are fun and relatable, the plot is incredibly interesting and immersing, and the spice is perfect 👌🏼

The spicy scenes are all very fluid and believable. Nothing feels forced or like it’s there just to be there like some romances have. I completely and thoroughly enjoyed everything about this title.

The performance loses a star for me because the narrator has a bunch of weird pauses and talks a little slow. I bumped it up to 1.3 speed and it fixed that though lol. Other than that he did an excellent job bringing the characters to life!

An incredible listen.

This is one of the better “knights in shining armor” books I have listened to and perhaps one of the best M/M books ever. Hats off to Alex Di Campi for writing an amazing medieval historical fiction filled with intrigue, political high drama, and everything else that goes with it. Then within this excellent story, not being afraid to explore the love and passion of the two main characters. Alex wrote them so beautifully and no part of their relationship and how it came to be felt rushed or unbelievable. And boy did they come together…the sex scenes are written very passionately but not unrealistic.
This story, and the relationship of our heroes takes a very winding road so fasten your seatbelt because you are in for a range of emotions.
Thank you to Richard Pearce whose narration was spot on for every character. And there were many throughout this epic journey of a novel with long stays in Devon, London, France and Scotland. The voices were awesome, the passion was there for each person and the accents perceptible. Terrific job.

Fantastic Writing and Outstanding Performance

This book without a doubt is the best book I have listened in the last couple. And I am sure will be listening to it again soon; as don't want to let go of the characters and their lives.

It kept me invested, intrigued and enthralled from the beginning until the very end .

The performance was outstanding.

Raw. Real. Amazing.

This is honestly one of the best books I’ve ever read (listened to?). Most of these types of books are little more than glorified fan fiction but this…wow. I was shocked at how it did not attempt to soften the horrors of war. At how violent it could be at times. At how passionate the relationships are. The characters feel real, and the author follows the historical setting closely enough that the characters seem like they could be actual, feasible people. And the reader! An absolutely stunning performance to bring the story to life. He manages to have a different voice for each character without it ever feeling forced or strained. I cannot recommend this story enough!

Wow, just wow...

I read a lot of books (over 800 in my Audible library), though rarely write reviews (I miss when you could just rate the books). Here's an exception though...I love historical fiction, I like gay-themed stories, the combination here was just outstanding. The fantastic story, and the beautiful writing coupled with excellent narration really caught me up, I could have listened to this story go on for another 30 hours! Excellent characters, interesting theme, political intrigue, battles, true love, in all a really really great story...aargh, I'm just sorry it's finished because I have no idea where to go now that will satisfy me in the same way. Anyway, give it a shot, this was well worth the credit.

Extraordinary

Every character is fleshed out. The narrator is great. The story made me feel so full, then ripped my heart out, then ripped it out again, and then made me cry with happiness. Read it.
