Publisher's Summary

Her job is to keep their secrets safe. A secluded Retreat Center full of preternatural clientele. A talking crow who thinks she knows everything. A new boy in town asking a lot of nosy questions. Sound like a lot to handle? Not for 15-year-old Macy Steward, who lives at the Center and helps her parents run the highly unusual retreats. For Macy, this is simply normal routine. And it’s all going exactly as expected, that is until the guests become dangerously unpredictable, the talking crow goes suspiciously missing, and the new boy turns out to be so much more than he first appeared. “Here comes trouble.”

That’s the last thing the crow says before disappearing. Even though she doesn’t scare easily, Macy has to admit the crow was right. Because soon enough, she finds herself trying to keep a lot more things safe than just secrets...

Loved it!!

This book was something special. I love sci-fi or other-worldly fantasy reads and the world created in this book was seriously fantasy done right. Loved it!!

You start off thinking it's a simple YA novel with the whole boy-meets-girl scenario playing out in the background. You soon discover, whoa nelly, that it's that and a whole lot more!

It's hard to really tell you too much without telling you too much but even if this genre-bending story is not your usual, the narration is so good that you won't care.

The story ends like there is a second book. I certainly hope so!!

good listen

This was a good listen. The narration was excellent and the voices were distinct for each person with no irritating ones. There was plenty of action and a tiny bit of teenage angst. I look forward to seeing how the series develops.

Intriguing and Adventurous!

What a fantastic book! I don't usually go for this genre but I was intrigued by the description. No regrets, not even a little one!

Esther Archer Lakhani has created a really fascinating and complex world. It is planet Earth but also so much more. The question of whether there are more planets with life in the universe has been solved and this book explores that possibility. The story is set on Earth but not all the characters are Earthlings as we know them.

I particularly enjoyed the descriptions in this book. The book isn't overly prose-y but there are definitely moments that were enhanced by a more indepth description. The characters are interesting as well. I liked that the main character is female but that the other characters contributed significantly to the progression of the plot. Macy is brave, funny, slightly awkward (as is appropriate for her age), intelligent and humble. The story comes to an interesting conclusion too.

Now that this world has been created, I hope there are more books featuring the adventures (or misadventures) of Macy, Gigi and the rest of the characters. The possibilities are endless! Loved it!
