Publisher's summary

Modern culture is obsessed with identity.

Since the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision in 2015, sexual identity has dominated both public discourse and cultural trends — yet no historical phenomenon is its own cause. From Augustine to Marx, various views and perspectives have contributed to the modern understanding of the self.

In this timely audiobook, Carl Trueman analyzes the development of the sexual revolution as a symptom — rather than the cause — of the human search for identity. Trueman surveys the past, brings clarity to the present, and gives guidance for the future as Christians navigate the culture in humanity’s ever-changing quest for identity.

The most important book for our time

If you have ever wondered how our culture and the West, in particular, has got to where we are today, READ THIS BOOK! The topics discussed in here, and how they've evolved over time to this point, are explained in such a thorough manner that I would argue if you pay close enough attention, you'll never again be left scratching your head at what has happened at nearly every level of our society. "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self" is an incredibly enlightening read--a "Triumph" of modern scholarship unmatched by any other "academic" writing in recent history that I've had the pleasure of reading. Inform yourself today and stop living in the dark.

Prophetic

This book is profoundly prophetic, not in predicting the future but in its incisive reading of the past that leads to clear insights into the present. It’s the most important book I’ve read in years.

An essential work to explain the modern West

Perhaps one of the most important works written in the last 50 years. Trueman brings the modern western philosophical dumpster fire together for the reader from art, to political philosophy, to literature, and history. This book is fundamental to understanding the shared relationships between the movements subverting Western Civ.
