Publisher's summary

Leonidas is coerced into a dice game at his local popina, with a stranger who turns out to not be such a stranger after all. His presence puts all around him in danger, and Leonidas struggles to keep the man’s identity secret.

Leonidas has no wish to be caught up in this trouble–he’s about to begin working as a builder, his ticket out of life as a gladiator and bodyguard.

The next morning at the building site, Leonidas almost immediately stumbles across a valuable ring buried in the mud, a ring that has the potential to change the destiny of Rome. Nero commands Leonidas and Cassia to uncover everything about this ring, including who owned it and how it had come to be where it was found. They will not be allowed to fail.

The ring proves to be only the tip of the troubles Leonidas uncovers, with danger from the Emporium to the Esquiline and some that visits Leonidas and Cassia very close to home.

WHEW JUST IN TIME!

This author is one of my favorites so I was glad to get emailed that audiobook was available. Leonidas is starting his dream job. Before he was forced to be a gladiator, he was training as a builder/Architect. First day, he finds a ring. A ring with a dangerous past and a tricky present. The ring was a trap laid for a coworker. A lure to his ultimate death. Leonidas is a good guy who struggles always to do what's right. That tendency complicates his life greatly. Along with trying to solve the mystery of the ring and stay on Nero's good side.. He is trying to find a way to free Cassie. He is in love with Cassie but doesn't take any action in that direction since she is his slave or a slave. He wants her free so he can make sure she feels she has a choice. I have to say this is not my favorite of the series but I will listen to it again soon to see what I missed. Well worth the credit. A solid addition to the series. I had to check and see if it was same narrator. Yes same same. Good Story!

Couldn't figure it out

I loved this mystery. It was one of those stories that I just couldn't figure out how they were going to investigate . I love the chemistry between the regular characters and the secondary characters are wonderfully written for the story. I find the setting in ancient Rome refreshingly different.
