A man's body is discovered in a church yard, the sign of the cross carved into his abdomen. Later he is found to be Alan Jacobs, a troubled psychiatric nurse. It seems to Jenny Cooper, Severn Vale District Coroner, this is likely to be an open and shut suicide case, but something tells her to probe a little deeper.

After another tragic death, Jenny’s suspicions turn toward a powerful new global phenomenon: the politically ambitious and intoxicatingly charismatic Mission Church of God.

Meanwhile Jenny must finally confront the demons of her past; and as her private life threatens to shatter, she faces intense pressure from all angles to cease her investigations. But to Jenny Cooper, whose whole life has been governed by deception, the truth is everything....

I like the Jenny books, this one is a little heavy for me. It has a lot to do with people taking what should be a beautiful thing in religion and making it the worst in their blindness. another incredibly well-written story. The topics of mental health, pornography, sex, and religion as taboos was well handled. The narrator continues to be wonderful.

This is a remarkable book. It starts simply then. I was builds with so much detail it is hard to find a place to take a break. It seems too long in some places but hang in there, the plot thickens. And delivers a well earned surprise ending.

This installment showed developments in the main character’s own journey as a person, which I enjoyed. The plot was more complex than in the two previous books - perhaps overly complex in parts, which made the plot seem unnecessarily slow to unfold in places. It casts religious institutions in a negative, self-serving light, which may be an accurate portrayal of some churches, yet I dislike the author also conveying a negative image of faith itself. Overall, although this was a necessary book in the series for completion’s sake, it was not my favorite.
