When Liz Hoole, a free-spirited liberal from the Midwest, marries into a conservative Quaker family, she knows that raising children in compliance with Quaker values will be challenging. Twenty-five years later, she still feels like she's falling short of expectations. Fortunately, her faith and her friends in the small, rural North Carolina town of Cedar Branch keep her strong.

After her best friend's politically powerful father dies, Liz stumbles upon secrets from the past that threaten to unravel the current harmony in Cedar Branch, a town with a history of racial tension. As she researches more and eavesdrops on gossip at the Quaker Café, where everyone meets each morning, Liz soon discovers the truth about an injustice that she cannot reveal to anyone - not even her husband.

Surrounded by a cast of richly drawn Southern characters, Liz learns that even good people can make bad choices. Now, she must decide whether she has the strength to bring a past wrong to light, despite the consequences.

This is a new release of a previously published edition.

I really liked this story and I liked how this story lead to a compassionate solution without being syrupy.

An interesting, multi-layered and relevant story, it wasn't predictable and kept my attention. There were lots of characters, which was a little confusing. I don't enjoy hearing narrators try to communicate in the voices of characters of other genders, ages and accents; when that wasn't happening, I liked this narrator's voice and style.

A good "read".

This book is priceless.
Both entertaining and emotional, the author is able to point out both the differences and similarities of different faiths, families and communities.
I cried and I laughed...
I will watch for other works by this author.

I very much enjoyed this. I did not read reviews or anything that told me what it was about. I only knew it was a small town story. I was surprised by how much depth there was to it. So many stories entertained. Very enjoyable

Surprised

Please have your narrators learn the correct pronunciation of regional words. Southerners don't pronounce pecans "pee cans". It's p'cahn. Drove me nuts. No pun intended. Otherwise enjoyed the book

If you could sum up The Quaker Café in three words, what would they be?

Intriguing, capturing, addictive

What about Bahni Turpin’s performance did you like?

Her voice was easy to listen to and her portrayal of characters consise.

Any additional comments?

I was hesitant about this book, thinking on the surface it was all fluff. But soon after starting, I found myself eager to return to the car to listen to more. Characters were well developed, descriptions clear, story translated well to audio. Only disappointment was when the story was over!

What an eclectic book! Painful loss, committed love of both family and friends through profound challenges, deeply buried secrets to be uuntangled, genuine (not forced) forgiveness, spiritual faith, racial tension, and more--all with a nice touch of humor here and there. I thought at one point I'd figured out the secret, but the writer surprised me. As in real life, the story doesn't tie everything up neatly, but still the ending will have you saying amen and maybe even hallelujah in hope for the future.

The story unfolds a bit slowly, but if you don't need a fast pace it's worth sticking with it.

My only quibble is a conversation about life after death. The characters' views are the writer's privilege, of course, but since the participants in the discussion were people of faith, as a committed Christian I would have liked at least the Methodist minister to express a traditional belief in an afterlife. But that's my personal preference.

A touching read, and the audiobook narrator is wonderful.

Will Touch Your Heart

Honestly, i was delightfully surprised by this book. The story faces the difficulties and realities of faith, racial tensions, social justice, death, honesty, redemption, forgiveneness, and ultimately, the need for community to come together for all of that. I expected just another Quaker romance and family story but entered into so much more. I laughed out loud and wept, even as I ached for wrongs to be righted. This is not a predictable happy ending story as so many are, but opened the idea of what my part is in ongoing tensions even if didn't cause them. Definitely a story worth reading or hearing. The reader Bahni Turpin narrated the story eloquently. Her southern accent and expression drew me into the drama or humor of each moment.

A Delightful Surprise
