Publisher's Summary

From the bestselling author of The Glassblower Trilogy comes an inspiring historical saga of a female photographer who must defy convention to live her dreams in turn-of-the-century Germany.

In 1905, on her twenty-sixth birthday, Mimi Reventlow receives a marriage proposal from the vicar of her family’s church. But a future of housework, childcare, and servicing a parish doesn’t appeal to the restless and unconventional Mimi. She has ambitions of her own--to follow in the footsteps of her beloved uncle Josef and become a traveling photographer. Leaving behind all that has been mapped out for her, Mimi dares to pursue her passion and sets out alone to make her own mark.

A visit to her ailing uncle in the idyllic mountain town of Laichingen, Germany, pauses Mimi’s journey. Here, among provincialism and rejection, she struggles to find her place within a vibrant but wary community. But Mimi’s resilience is only strengthened by adversity. Her courage is indomitable. Maybe here, among surprising kindred spirits and longing hearts, in a place she never expected, Mimi’s dreams might be coming into focus.

Half of a book

This book abruptly ended right in the middle of the story. Apparently you're supposed to read a second book.

It would be better to let the reader know it's an incomplete novel. If I had known I wouldn't have started it and don't intend to waste another minute on it.

A Fan of this Author . . . But

I've read/listened to several of Petra Durst-Benning's books and have always found them interesting. I'm drawn them particularly because of the time we spent in Germany while stationed there with the U.S. Army. This one starts out well, but as time goes on, it feels rushed and people are not introduced well, making one wonder who they are. There is a lack of the usual atmosphere which has made the author's books so appealing to me. Somehow the "glue" which normally holds the story together seems lacking in this one, almost as if someone else has written it. The narration is great.

Enjoyed it -first book of two

The first of two books in a series. This one is set in turn of the 20th century Germany and tells the story of a female photographer, an unconventional job for an unconventional woman. Very nicely written. Enjoyed the audio version.

I love this author! I am so glad that her stories are translated. We would be missing so much if they were not. This book is narrated so beautifully.

Book ends at Chapter 36

Chapters 37-42 are a repeat of earlier chapters. Not sure if there are missing chapters, but definitely the end of this book is missing. I do like the storyline though and wonder how it was supposed to end.

Really Enjoyed

I liked that this book takes place on the other side of the world from me, and yet the challenges, decisions and joys of human existence, show themselves to be universal.

The Photographer

I have this story a 5 because I enjoyed the read. I enjoyed how t he characters became a part of the story and had a purpose for being there. Everyone had a good reason. for being included.
The scenery was beautiful and made you feel welcome. I wanted to dance the May like but my feet and back hurt from being at the festival all day.
