Story
From the best-selling author of the Sandman Slim series, a lush, dark, stand-alone fantasy built off the insurgent tradition of China Mieville and M. John Harrison - a subversive tale that immerses us in a world where the extremes of bleakness and beauty exist together in dangerous harmony in a city on the edge of civility and chaos. The Great War is over. The city of Lower Proszawa celebrates the peace with a decadence and carefree spirit as intense as the war’s horrifying despair.

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Felix Castor is a freelance exorcist, and London is his stomping ground. It may seem like a good ghostbuster can charge what he likes and enjoy a hell of a lifestyle, but there's a risk: sooner or later he's going to take on a spirit that's too strong for him. When Castor accepts a seemingly simple ghost-hunting case at a museum in the shadowy heart of London, what should have been a perfectly straightforward exorcism is rapidly turning into the Who Can Kill Castor First Show, with demons and ghosts all keen to claim the big prize.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
Sandman Slim returns in a stunning, high-octane thriller filled with the intense kick-ass action and inventive fantasy that are the hallmarks of New York Times best-selling author Richard Kadrey.
The request from Thomas Abbot, the Augur of the Sub Rosa council, couldn't come at a better time for James Stark, aka Sandman Slim. For a man who's most recently met Death - and Death's killer - a few months of normal life is more than he can handle. He needs a little action, and now Abbott wants Stark and Candy to investigate the disappearance of a young boy - and help uncover council members who might be tied to Wormwood's power brokers.
Stark's plans change when he meets a dying angel who gives him a vial of a mysterious black liquid that could be a secret weapon in the ongoing war between angels who want to allow human souls into heaven and rebel angels willing to die to keep them out. When one of Stark's closest friends is poisoned with the black liquid, Stark and Candy have to go to the only place where they might find a cure: hell.
But standing in their way are the damned souls who, even after death, still work for Wormwood. The secret deal they've struck with the rebel angels is darker than anything Stark has encountered. The fate of not only the world hangs in the balance but also the souls of everyone in it. Stark has to find a way to break the stalemate in the angel war, score the Perdition cure for the black poison, and make it back to LA in one piece - where an old enemy waits to finish him once and for all.

Not up to par.
I have listened to all the books in this series and always look forward to the latest installment. This one started slow and stayed there most of the book. There are action moments reminiscent of the previous books but they are fewer than in the past. The regulars in the series are there but the interaction is predictable and uninspired. The ending leaves a question if this was the final installment. I hope not, I would hate to see Stark go out with a whimper instead of a bang. I will look forward to the next book and hopefully we will be treated to the Sandman Slim we enjoy instead of the Stark we saw in this novel.

It's like Mr. Kadrey got bored half way in.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Other than the unending mentions of "the room of thirteen doors", the book was moving along well. Then it just fell off the rails with a long string of deus ex machina moments. There were so many it was laughable and they were all capped with a cliffhanger ending ripped off straight out of an Al Pacino movie. Even the setup for it was almost "copy and paste". Very disappointing book.
Would you be willing to try another book from Richard Kadrey? Why or why not?
Yes, but only because this is a lousy way to end the series. If he pulls this crap again though, I'm done with this author.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I've already seen it. The ending at least.

commercialism
Any additional comments?
IMO, a great book series is being ruined by blatant commercialism. The cliffhanger ending of the book was unexpected and out of character, it literally popped up right out of left field. The story was left unfinished and the death of Sandman Slim at the end was obvious diversion and cheap trick to keep reader’s interest in the next book installment. As the series has apparently gained in popularity recent installments have evolved into short novelettes at higher prices. If future audible books in this series are novelettes with unfinished endings, I can wait for them to appear on audible’s discounted book list.

As always a performance on this was perfect. Gritty but so easy to understand. The writing is always dark and humorous at the same time. If you've read the rest I suggest you to continue. A real unknown addition to the horror and thriller urban fantasy genre that more people should read
