Publisher's summary

Two years have passed since the war. The Primate is dead, the machines at Stonewater have been destroyed, yet without essence the Empire's economy has collapsed. Trade is at a standstill, famine sets in, and, with no food and no essence, the people begin to riot.

In the midst of the growing unrest, Miro struggles to balance his life with Amber against his resolve to keep threats to the Empire at bay. His sister Ella helps to build the machinery the Empire desperately needs, but she longs to find Killian and believes his powers will be needed in the conflict to come.

News of a wedding brings a much - needed ray of hope to the weary people. But as citizens and leaders gather from afar for the festivities, an evil threat shatters the fragile peace: one of the Evermen has returned. And he will not rest until he has completely destroyed the humans he despises.

Overall okay

These books have several good elements in them, such as, the world building, the interesting magic system and the individual character stories. But, there's so much battle and struggle struggle that it gets bogged down and a bit tedious, at times. The situation with Amber is kind of ridiculous. She's smart and capable, but she's a sorceress and she never has any of her sorceress'a gear with her, so she's really just a normal person. It's kind of weird. What's the point of her even being a sorceress? At least she is a good character, intelligent and capable. Overall, these books are okay. I'm always curious where the story is going, even though sometimes it's obvious. It would be nice if they were a little faster paced.

Break-Neck Pace

Continuing this saga, this novel ran at the clip of a thoroughbred at the Kentucky Derby. The author seamlessly wove various diverse plot points, all of which seemed to be hanging by a thread. It certainly seems like the conclusion will be flying at warp speed.

love the series

I like the story very much and the characters. l just wish there was a little less warming descriptions. It is too much and distracting.

Probably the best so far

Path of the Storm is the best of the trilogy so far, in my opinion. So often with trilogies the books get worse as the series progresses, but Maxwell seems hellbent on breaking that rule.

The aftermath of the war and realisation that one of the feared Evermen has returned adds a new dimension to the plot. Ella's insistence, even when others beg against it, to find a way to bring Killian back sees her gaining help from a source that, ordinarily would be seen as unthinkable.

In my last review I stated how Maxwell expanded his world, showing new lands and people. This time he's done it again, but on a far grander scale. The exploration into both the past and the present lands of his world make this book as enthralling as the plotline he has drummed up with the returning Everman.

All in all, this is a solid book and one that should not be missed.

brilliant

if it was a book it would be"unputdownable"- so as an audiobook I suppose it must be "unstoplisteningble!" great

Preferred this to book 2!

I love the narration, let's start there.
Storywise I once read that this series is almost like two two-book series and that's true, it's quite different from the first two, and actually I enjoyed it much more than book 2. It felt like the plot wasn't stunted by the author's attempt to "sexify" the story. I felt like the boundaries of "everything is going to work" were pushed farther and overall the pacing worked better than the two previous books.

A wonderful rendition of this powerful story

Having read the earlier parts of the series I was uncertain about how I'd take to 'someone else's voices' but Simon Vance captured the characters well and as ever carried the narrative with his delivery.

Enjoyable

This book takes up two years after the war. Essence is in short supply and trade is almost at a standstill and the Empire is on its knees.

Miro and Amber set the wedding date and leaders from all over attend. However, their wedding is brought to an abrupt end when an explosion kills, maims and sends people, including Amber's son, into a deep coma.

Miro sets off to far lands to try to find a cure for their son. Amber, unintentionally, gets to go with him. With the crew mutinying and Miro and Amber stranded on far away shores, this is only the beginning of their trials.

Meanwhile, Ella is trying to bring Killian back to try to counteract the evil which the Everman, Lord of the Night, who crossed over is wreaking on everyone.

This certainly has a lot going on and there never seems to be a dull moment.

Borderline refund jobby! Glad I’m done with it.

You know when you’re listening to a book and you feel no empathy to the main protagonists and, frankly, you wouldn’t care whether they all lived or died, you know you’re onto a loser! This book falls into this category for me.
The orator is OK, except for a couple of his characters that irritated me a bit e.g. Amir (sp?).
One to forget and certainly cannot recommend.

Fun book, good production for audio

The central characters are still long-suffering in this third book in the series. Plot twists abound (some less predictable, even if it follows the same kind of template as the previous books). Very enjoyable, would recommend the audiobook for anyone enjoying the previous books.

There is no lull in the story's pace and the feel for the characters is as strong as at the start.

I did get a bit 'urgh, don't know if I can be bothered anymore' during book 2, but persevered and am so glad I did, book 3 was gripping, really looking forward to book 4!
