Publisher's Summary

When life gives you oranges, you make orange juice...or keep them on the counter to grow old and eventually get thrown away. When it gives you a demonic master, you become a warlock; that's what I did anyway. My name is Benjamin, but you can call me Big Daddy Ben - no one else does.

I was midway through my 20s and living a relatively normal life when everything changed. No, I wasn’t accepted into some weird warlock school for gifted adults. Technology failed, all of it, even simple stuff like bicycles. It all broke apart as if an unseen force was dismantling all those wonderful inventions we took for granted. It was magic of course. Magic was reentering the world at an accelerating pace. You didn’t need to live in a fantasy castle or attend online potion brewing classes to realize it; just peeking out the front window and watching your neighbor get their head blown off by an energy beam would do the trick.

This is the start of my (LitRPG) adventure and how I became known to everyone, even your mom, as the One-Armed Warlock.

Delightfully twisted!!!

Fun story and narration!

Ben and his family are trying to make it through the apocalypse. It's not going well. The world has changed, and now has game like features including stats and abilities. Ben found himself a patron, and then things started getting weird. How crazy can the life of a one-armed warlock get?

BJ does a great job with the narration!

This story is fun and entertaining. It shows a different side of the coin from most stories as the MC is not a "good guy."

I can't wait for the next book to come out!

An Irreverent Romp and Love Letter to RPGs.

Good fun. That's really all you need to know... But I'll keep writing. In a time where I was unable to meet with my DnD group for over a year, this audio book was an excellent and welcome substitute. Durl White has a certain slap-dash style to his writing, that actually works in the Lit-RPG genre, as he is extremely aware of his own idiosyncrasies.

There is no obvious super objective to this story, which would have been problematic in most cases, but that also works in this specific instance. The fact that the reader is aware of the One Armed Warlock's level progression, abilities, skills, and loot, always provides a sense of progress, despite the fact that it often isn't clear where the story is going. And, honestly, the sort of "side quest overdose" that this book is, in no way detracts from the enjoyment of it. It reminds me of starting up a fresh game in Skyrim and saying "Right, we're going to play a game where I murder every NPC I come across, because I want their sweet loot." Or, better yet... that time that you and the DnD gang decided to to run a chaotic evil campaign and discovered, "Huh... You know what. I make a pretty good sociopath."

This...is basically the comedic chaotic evil DnD game we all WISH we could have.

As for the performance, BJ Whimpy is delivers a quick pace, with great comedic timing, and an awesome array of character voices. His slight, natural Pacific Northwestern American regional dialect, crisp baritone, and wide vocal range works really well for this genre, and comedy in general. He is an absolute delight to listen to. It's really nice to hear a narrator that isn't strictly Midwestern American Standard, and it was honestly refreshing. I'll have to keep an ear open for his other work.

So, if you're still reading this review, trying to figure out if it's worth the price... Drop that credit on this bad boy and get in on the wicked good fun.

Love the Book1

Great change for the typical LitRPG tropes/stories out there. Very diabolical and hilarious. My biggest complaint was the narrator was flying through the book at a speed that need to be slowed to .9 speed to flow right, but then some of the tone diminished. This was significantly improved in book two however, so I didn’t remove stars for it past 4* as his accents were great and engaging. It’s just his speed and tone was that of a big bother trying to fly through a book to get his kid brother to finally go to freaking sleep! See Book Two for my next review. It’s not as enthusiastic.

The best book of the year

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves playing fantasy RPG‘s and wanted to know what it was like to go through one. When I finish this book I was left with fear that there was nothing to continue on the story. I am so happy that there is a second one in the series and I certainly hope there are more to come

Far exceeded my expectations

This book is funny, crass, and revels in the absurd. There were times when I couldn't quite believe what I was hearing, yet I wanted to hear more. Overall I loved it and can't wait for book 2.

Must Listen To

This book is such a welcomed change to the regular books in this genre. I love that Ben isn't the typical good character that saves everyone that he comes across. I'm highly anticipating the second book to release on Audible.

What the...dark...funny dark litprg/gamelit

Ok, that's wild. A very unique MC (the cover doesn't lie). A very different take for this genre on how your class (game term specific) could effect your looks AND outlook. The story flowed very well from one plot point to another (which is always great) and unique and funny situations occur. As I am a big fan of the genre (between my 200+ litrpg/gamelit books on the kindle (I have 274, but some of those are duplicates where I had also ended up buying compilations) I can only think of one series that is similar, but it is way darker and not at all funny, but good in it's own way...this is better.

It was a fun listen and I've picked up book 2 on the kindle (I don't have the patience to wait for the audio book, though I'll end up getting that one later as I like to keep my collections up when I start them and they are fun).

Note: I received this audio-book free for an honest review by the author, narrator, or publisher.

bad guy vs world

A different litrpg. lite on stats. Narration was done well. Some of actions taken by the MC are disturbing. Leans more towards comic relief than mass murder and mayhem.

A surprising journey

I knew straight from the introduction that I was in for a journey with this one and it certainly did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the world idea, irreverent humour and had many a moment where I laughed so suddenly and so loudly that I scared my cats! Unlike some books that ask you to check your political correctness and seriousness at the door, I was very happy to see that it didn’t descend into and rely purely on cringeworthy sexism or other such commentary that are repeated by many others. I was originally given a code for this book by the author for review and got half way through listening to it on a UK account and realised I needed this book on my Aussie account. The narration was wonderful too, job very well done to both author and narrator and I can’t wait for book 2!!!
