Half is good, Half is a lecture
I was very excited about this book. As a Lizzie Borden fan I have read everything. Indeed, half of it, the Lizzie part, is great. Then it moves into modern day about a Mexican immigrant and here we run into problems. It is unfortunate that today everything has to be political, everything has to be "woke." I come from the Left but the last place I want to deal with this is in an escapist novel. I'm not sure why she felt the need to virtue signal this way. I get it, she's saying we treat Mexican immigrants the way we treated Irish immigrants and it's true, we do, yet I'm not sure I can endure it. I think I might have to just skip through to the LIzzie parts, which are very fine indeed.
