Little did i know that i would be overpaying. My BS meter went into overdrive immediately both with the text and the narrator. The content itself was less of the issue as i am already fully aware of the subject and have a few books on my shelf covering the subject. I could see through the fawning (i.e. today we would call it pandering) praise. No big deal. The early Muslim dynasties were truly amazing, especially the Iberian ones. And the author is one of "those" British Orientalists from the 19th century (yes, this was written over 130 years ago). What really caused me to put down this audiobook was the narrator's inability to pronounce properly. It's one thing to mispronounce the Arabic words and/or Islamic dynasties (took me a minute to realize he was mispronouncing Fatimids) but it's another entirely to mispronounce Madrid (MaH-Dread). WtF!? This doesn't even address his overall reading mannerisms, which has been mentioned in previous reviews
Then, I stopped and started doing some internet sleuthing. Lo and behold, there are FOUR versions of this audiobook available on Audible!? And they've all been produced/published between 2018 & 2020!? All with different covers and narrators?! The ONE thing they have in common?! All the "Moors" on the covers are sub-saharan Africans. Then, i looked up the author and discovered he was an Orientalist from the 19th century!? What does that mean? Oh, it means his work is in the Public Domain, i.e. someone can "grab it" for themselves and stick a different cover on it or a different narrator on it and pretend it's original or new. Charge next to nothing for it on Audible, as the covers are either cheaply created and/or lifted from other sources (again, some public domain images appear on a couple covers), and how much does it cost to pay for a narrator who can't even pronounce the city of Madrid?! The only thing more reprehensible are some of the comments made by reviewers. Some are truly ignorant and don't know they've been had. Others are deceitfully duplicitous in THEIR fawning praise for the book (Look at some of the names associated with the high reviews). Not sure how many are true reviews or AI or fake accounts. Then, there are the BS Youtube videos, which use this book as a source.
I'm not sure how much of the information presented in the book is true or reliable, as i was unable to finish it (i don't have much patience or a high gag tolerance), nor did i waste my time watching any of the plethora of conspiracy BS Youtube videos. The author did make some mildly racist swipes at the Spanish who pushed the Muslims out (he makes derogatory comments about the Spanish then as well as the Spanish of today or HIS day anyways as backwards and that they would have been better to keep the Moors, but that's how stupid they were, blah, blah, blah). Amazon Music does allow for one free book a month now but I'm not willing to even waste that "free" credit on whoever is using a false presentation that Black Africans invaded Europe and were some kind of Atlantean (i.e, from the mythical island of Atlantis) people that had preternatural abilities and the world would be a better place if the Muslims had kept Spain and/or taken over the world.
FYI: the earliest Muslims were NOT all black! They came from Arabia picking up people/converts/opportunists as they moved along. North Africa is not majority black-skinned. And the majority of Sub-saharan Africans today are not Muslims!? Albeit, in places like Nigeria, Mali, and Burkina Faso the Muslim population is increasing under the yoke of various fundamentalists. I hear the women "love it". Look into historically how the Arabs have treated sub-saharan Blacks, even in the 20th century. Maybe you've heard of a thing called slavery. It's still purported to be practiced today in some Muslim countries, specifically IN Africa.
Frankly, Amazon should be ashamed to be making money off this fleecing of Muslims and Blacks (mostly american because i haven't met too many blacks of other nationalities that fall for this BS). But, everyone else is doing it (pandering and making money off the race-baiting), why shouldn't they?
Fraudulent & exploitative race-bait
