Minnie Cooper knows two things with certainty: that her New Year's birthday is unlucky, and that it's all because of Quinn Hamilton, a man she's never met. Their mothers gave birth to them at the same hospital just after midnight on New Year's Day, but Quinn was given the cash prize for being the first baby born in London in 1990 - and the name Minnie was meant to have, as well. With luck like that, it's no wonder each of her birthdays has been more of a disaster than the one before.

The world has changed around 79-year-old librarian Millicent Carmichael, a.k.a. Missy. Though quick to admit that she often found her roles as a housewife and mother less than satisfying, Missy once led a bustling life driven by two children, an accomplished and celebrated husband, and a Classics degree from Cambridge. Sixteen-year-old Evie Epworth stands on the cusp of womanhood. But what kind of a woman will she become?
The fastest milk-bottle-delivery girl in East Yorkshire, Evie is tall as a tree and hot as the desert sand. She dreams of an independent life lived under the bright lights of London (or Leeds). The two posters of Adam Faith on her bedroom wall (‘brooding Adam’ and ‘sophisticated Adam’) offer wise counsel about a future beyond rural East Yorkshire. Her role models are Charlotte Bronte, Shirley MacLaine and the queen. But, before she can decide on a career, she must first deal with the malign presence of her future stepmother, the manipulative and money-grubbing Debbie.
If Evie can rescue her bereaved father, Arthur, from Debbie’s pink and over-perfumed clutches and save the farmhouse from being sold off then maybe she can move on with her own life and finally work out exactly who it is she is meant to be.
Moving, inventive and richly comic, The Miseducation of Evie Epworth is the most joyful debut novel of the year and the best thing to have come out of Yorkshire since Wensleydale cheese.

Wonderful!
A very funny book and one with a real heart too. It's beautifully written and beautifully read - I just couldn't stop listening to it. Evie narrates most of the book and her voice is a wonderful mixture of being naive and knowing. Her thoughts and little sayings are hilarious - I've read someone compare her to Adrian Mole and Bridget Jones and I can see why! There are short flashbacks in the book that reveal various backstories and it's all woven together really well. A wonderful, funny, touching book!

Ideal Holiday Book
I found this a lovely book which was beautifully read by Heather Long. It has a good story which keeps you interested right to the end and would be an ideal book for holiday listening. Evie the main character has a wicked sense of humour which keeps it light hearted but there is an underlying tragedy which unfolds giving her a sense of purpose to set things right.

very enjoyable
Really enjoyed this book, it's a nice easy listen. Great characters, good story, very descriptive. My only slight mark down was for the narrator's French accent, it was good in parts and then a bit odd in others, however the rest of her performance was great and she really brought the characters to life.

Children eagerly hang up their stockings, families go to church together and everyone enjoys the treats of the festive season. And when it snows as the carol singers make their way round the cottages on the green, it looks as if Christmas will be perfect this year. But not everything is as peaceful as it seems.
