Great Story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Probably not. The performance leaves a bit to be desired. Lynda Evans, although she may be a good screen actress, is not a very good narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Brandy Harriet McCabe is my favorite character. I love her sense of morality.

Did Lynda Evans do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Not really. And her inflections, pauses and timing were not always appropriate.

I've read this book many times and it's one of my favorites.

Narration could use improvement

I read the book about six times over the past 30 years and was excited to hear the audio version which I really liked. I did find the narration to be a little odd because I heard swishing noises as she was reading the book also in chapter 34, she mentioned Marc, the boyfriend of Shay when his name throughout the book was Merrit another discrepancy was when Rachel was reading Brandy‘s obituary. She mentioned that Brandy was born August 1980 which makes no sense because Brandy died at the age of 98. I believe she meant to say 1880 was the date of Brandy‘s birth, overall I’m enjoying the narrative because I always love this book. I found the swishing of the pages to be a little distracting. I’ve never heard that in the audio version of a book before.

Good Story ok performance

The story was very good but the only fly in the ointmint was that sometimes you could hear the narrator turning the page.

Timeless Trip Through Time

Marlys captured me when I was just 12 years old with "The Mirror". I continue to pull it out to read at least once a year and always find myself immersed the 1800's. I am fascinated with the concept of changing places with a grandparent and experiencing everything they faced from periods long passed. Marlys did an amazing job of capturing the Boulder and Front Range areas during the 1970's going into the 1980's. The descriptions of the surrounding area was extremely recognizable if you lived in the area during that time. Marlys obviously did some great research to be able to paint such a vivid picture of the 1800's as well as modern day.

Every time I read this book, I laugh, I cry, I feel the utter defeat and the triumph of Brandy and Shay as two very strong women facing paths they might not otherwise have survived if they had not switched places.

Lynda Evans was a wonderful narrator. I felt she captured Shay's essence completely as a strong feminist learning to depend on others around her when her familiarity dissolves around her. Listening to Lynda narrate made Shay come alive in a totally new way for me.

Great story, mediocre narration

Narrator was a bit monotone and seemed to have trouble keeping characters straight. but otherwise it was a wonderful story and I highly recommend it.
